Lounging around Charles de Gaulle airport

... America’s most decorated war hero, and told quite an amazing story. It’s amazing that he survived the war. Among other places he fought in Alsace, along the Rhine River. My wife and I lived in Alsace for six years, so I was quite interested to recognize the names of some little villages where he fought that were very near our former home. The book is well written and worth the time it takes to read it.

We arrived shortly before 06:00 in Paris, which was ...

A Rocky Start in Paris

... to take advantage of the free Wi-fi and of course knew I needed that light at night so that I could read, my only source of comfort wherever I go in the world...my books. Reluctantly, I headed back down to reception to face blondie. I was given a new room, 108. Walked into 108 and found myself in an empty room with 8 beds! Wonderful. Unpacked, called home, called Ryan, got online. I was delighted. EXHAUSTED but delighted. Skpye is a wonderful internet tool that lets you make ...

Bike tour and Free Museum Day!!

... milk. I got something white, yet frothy, and very sweet. They even gave me sugar to put into it. I am going to make an effort to ask someone next time. That's all of my excitement. I start school tomorrow so I might have to start thinking of more domestic tasks- homework, grocery shopping, laundry. I just have to remember that whatever I do, I'm doing it in Paris! In my humble opinion, they certainly don't lack for culture here.

Voyage a Paris!

... fresh baked bread, fresh baked quiches, cheeses, meats, fruit - pinch me! I don't know how long the cobblestone street I was walking on had been there, but it just added to the texture and feel of this little slice of Paris. It was a cruel trick of nature that I wasn't hungry for anything yet (for once), so I vowed to return for lunch. I got a little lost trying to find the Sacre-Coeur, but went on a wonderful little detour of Montmartre. Ivy was growing ...

... other master's pieces of work. After leaving the museum we only had time for a fromage bagette before heading back to the hotel to pick up our luggage and meet our driver (planned ahead for a change and organised a hotel transfer!) We were happily on our way to the airport when a policeman on a motor cycle blew his whistle and asked our driver to pull over. We were stuck there for about 20 minutes with the policeman checking 6 or 7 of the drivers ...

Musee D'Orsay

We'd heard from various sources that the Musee D'Orsay was a not to be missed art museum that we'd be able to experience in a half a day, unlike the vast Louvre. We weren't disappointed. It's incredible to be able to stand so close and see all the detail in paintings by artists like Van Gogh and Monet.

... things, such as the fact that everyone spoke French and half the people were black, it was almost exactly the same as an Australian barby. However, I say 'almost exactly' for a few reasons: 1. & ;nbs p; everyone dressed up. The girls wore makup and the guys did their hair 2. & ;nbs p; after the food, everyone got up and started dancing to the music and the guys started rapping. (which certainly ...

filthy hostels

... headache, the filthy beadcover caused a facial rash even through the sheet. Reasons enough to look out for another place to sleep in Paris. In the evening, we strolled around to the Bastille and into Marais where we found a nice hotel in Rue de Caron - 60€ for the double room made the same price; and we had all the comfort needed and a huge bathroom on our own.

The Louvre

My time here in Paris is rushing by... so much to see and do but so little time. This is becoming a huge theme of this RTW trip and I cringe when I read that other RTW planners are planning to see 50 cities in 52 weeks. If I did this trip again, I would streamline it considerably... maybe to two continents as well (Asia and South America). You need at least 3 months to do Europe properly. Even though I'm glad I did the ...

Paris...........Day 2

... Cathedral walking along the Seine. We stopped a few times on the way and lost the boys because there were a few little markets stalls set up along the river selling lots of cool paintings and things which of course some of us wnated to buy. It was a pretty nice day so we didn't really take much attention to how long it took but I think it was roughly 1/2 an hour. They were having a service inside the catehdral so ...
