... well, I finally shouted, "Dame la vaca"!!! Threatening swells of wind and water came bursting forth at this request, much to my great surprise. A spout of at least twenty feet erupted through the blow hole and into the air as if some invisible whale had been behind all the fun. Soaked by the menacing spray, we became immediately overcome by laughter and I thanked him for contributing to a truly wonderful experience.
... a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico itself. Remnants of old cannons and a couple of working ones are preserved well. It has splendid views of both Old San Juan and particularly of the bay. We loved the sunset from there, it was amazing. Content with how we spent the day, we headed back to our hotel through the music and dance being performed on the plazas and streets; carrying the rhythm and spirit of the festival with us.
San Juan, Puerto Rico magicarpet... from being arrested. He said the guy was going on about a security breach on a United States port facility and given that Pete had just wandered on with no problems, didn't see how it was so secure?? But this was no time to argue the point, so off we went back across the bay just as a hi-tech Customs speed boat came flying along, stopped at the wharf, chatted to the men for a few minutes while checking us out pottering off in the dinghy (real terrorist threat we ...
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico bellavita... we arrived at the island in the early light Pete and I started to wonder if in fact once again we'd been duped. The island from the east looks like a giant plateau raised out of the water with tall inhospitable cliffs 200feet high, scrubby windswept bushes and rocky shores. It did not look good and as we sailed along the coast to the anchorage on the south western side we were less than impressed. Once we reached the end of the island there was a spit of flat land ...
Mona Island, Puerto Rico bellavitaWe decided to check out the beautiful tropical rain forests of Puerto Rico on our first day of the trip. Our guide for the day was this local guy who was friendly & knew a lot about all the flora & fauna of the forests. We had a mother & daughter couple as fellow travelers with us for this trip to the rain forest. We do love to spend time outdoors; not to say that we are athletic, but we just love being a little closer ...
El Yunque-Luquilo, Puerto Rico magicarpet... one of the most gorgeous beaches..the town is passed in 5 minutes, chickens walking their babies around, inbetweeen and on the cars..publicos are enjoying the blooming business and carrying the hundreds of gringos anywhere they desire to go.. in the campsite i get greeted by a life-long traveler John willing to share all he has collected with dumpster diving and of course to brighten up his days his tent is located just next to the only soap allowed showers...
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico ramblerThe promised land. World-class board-breaking waves of Tres Palmas and Domes skirted by the crystal clear waters of Desecheo Island. House right on the beach with a swimming pool. Dive Shop, Taino Divers, in Black Eagle Marina. Banana Dang and the Rum Shack up in Puntas. Life is SWEET!
Rincon, Puerto Rico zroesingerAll flights arrive to BQN at extremely inconvenient times 4am! During my time in Rincon I made the trip thrice. Call Carlos in Rincon. He is dependable, friendly, speaks fluent English, is a Rincon local, has a huge van for your surf boards and is an all around good guy.
Aguadilla, Puerto Rico zroesinger... and bar, mostly because we didn't want to get back in the car. The food was very good and the beer was cold, and they had a live band that played. We spent the next several days at the beach in front of our hotel. I walked about two miles down the beach and while there were homes and hotels along the way, the beach was completely empty. We found a dive shop in town, and while we are not divers, we thought ...
