From vines to hay and something about food

Today Daryl and I travelled from Najera to Santo Domingo, a distance of about 22kms. The most noticable thing about the walk was that the fields changed from grape vines as far as the eye could see to open paddocks where hay had been grown, cut and stored. The weather again was just perfect after a big storm during the night. We've just had another …

... not somewhere I would want to live. It seemed as though there was a cute very old center of the town that had been built up on its outskirts with newer, shittier infrastructure. However, there was a river with a park around it and some cafes to sit and enjoy the view. Very nice. There we sat for about 30 minutes, had a coke or two, water, zumo de naranja, cafe con leche. The majority of our walk today was on a wide dirt path that again led us through the beautiful wine country with the rocky red ...

... and finishing at Santiago all in one go. Am I crazy? Then two Irish ladies, Marie and Mairead sat on the other side of me and I didn't know which way to turn as both conversations were brilliant. Over lovely pinchos (goat's cheese, fresh anchovies, roast peppers and fish pâté but not all together), and Rioja we all got to know each other. John and Mary left as they are starting early in the morning and Marie, Mairead and I had the funniest of conversations. They are ...

... much like in the states, priests are few and far between. We usually end up with a self-guided tour, if the doors are open! Today is the Feast of St. James, the patron of the Camino. You'd think we'd be able to find one today. One bartender earlier today said this year's festival coincides with the one-year anniversary of a deadly train crash just outside of Santiago de Compestela last year on July 24. More than 80 people ...
