My Weekend in Bagamoyo

So this past weekend was my last weekend in Tanzania! *tear* For my last weekend I want to go somewhere so Roxy and I decided to head about an hour north to Bagamoyo. Bagamoyo used to be a major city. It was the capital of German East Africa for some time before they moved it to Dar. It was also a major slave exporting city. Bagamoyo is right across from Zanzibar so the slaves would be shipped to Zanzibar before being shipped to the Middle East. Bagamoyo has become run down and is now a small...

The horn is your friend. When riding out of Dar the horn was on all of the time. Not to tell people to move (they sometimes did) to let people now where you are so they don't run you over.
It was about 40+ degrees the traffic was the worst i have ever seen and the 2 lane road was about a 4 lane one. The only way was to pass everything on the inside, outside and any place you could squeeze the bike without crashing.

Kippepeo, Dar Es Salaam

We got up in the morning and had breakfast on our roof. It was complimentary and we were thrilled to discover we could order eggs. No one else was there and so we decided to run into town to check the internet and look in some local craft stores. The sky was a dark grey and by the time we were a block away from the internet café it had begun to sprinkle, quickly turning into rain, and then buckets of rain. It was shocking how quickly it ...

... by my surroundings, the people and the experience I am having here.

The safari a couple of weeks ago was really incredible. I travelled with my friends, Nick & Dana, who are the ones I also went to Zanzibar with, and we had a great time. Our first day's plan was slightly alttered as our 7am flight to Kilimanjaro on Precision Air, was not so precise that morning, and we didn't actually leave until 12pm, but everything else was amazingly smooth. When we arrived ...

... had a "family" vibe, so it has been an adjustment to such a big group now. Not to mention that there seem to be some strong personalities, cliques and drama forming in the new group, which we just never had to deal with. For those CCS alumni who may be reading this from home, you are very much missed, and it is not the same without you. It's strange to think that you can form such a strong bond with people in just 3-4 weeks, especially when you are outisde ...

Train from Mwanza to Tabora

So, on Monday, June 14th, Alli and I embarked on a trip full of question marks... would we make it to Kigoma, Gombe, Zanzibar? How? When? The two things we knew for sure were that 1) we had first class train tickets from Mwanza to Tabora ($18) and 2) we were booked at the Orion Tabora Hotel for the evening. We had done some pre-trip shopping, so we had good bread, cheese, pringles, fruit, and chocolate bars to amuse us on our long trip. We arrived at ...

Serengeti tour

Well after a days rest from our climb we headed off into the unknown for a spot of game viewing. Our First day was to Lake Manyara which was just quietly a little unimpressive. There was however a lot of baby animals which were quiet cute and made up for there not being many animals. On the morning of our second day we had the real Bobby experience (our tour comnpany) we were told that they ...

Though some people do it (see Paul Theroux's excellent 'Dark Star Safari' and various confused Japanese looking forlorn and bewildered in campsites) Africa is not the easiest or safest place to travel independently. The best way to see as much as you can is to join an organised overland expedition and jump in a big ol'truck with a load of strangers, along with tents, cooking gear, a driver and a guide. Oh, and it's best not to forget your senses of humour and ...

Getting ready to help

The Singida Hospital which is a government hospital is the only hospital for a very large area and needed help with upgraded equipment. A group headquartered in Union Iowa called Outreach Africa was behind the work also arranged for a large group of Doctors, Nurses, other medical personnel, and support people to come to the hospital to do surgery, medical training, and what ever could be done to assist the local staff.
