Wall upon wall of painted murals, carvings from medium to minute, tiny chapels, the smell of bees wax, hand woven gold embroidered vestments, silver and gold vessels with the most intricate detail, original documentation of payment required of peasants, dour attendants wandering about eyeing up your skimpy touristy clothing and daring you to touch anything.... ...

We had the afternoon to explore Patmos, a smallish Island with some nice shops and tavernas. Our tummies had settled enough to attempt some Greek food however beer was not appealing at all! John the Apostle is thought to have been on Patmos when he received a vision from Jesus, and hence the island is on the Christian Pilgrimage route.

Dinner that night was a traditional Greek feast on board and we were treated with some Greek ...

... surrounds this monastery; we walked through narrow alleyways flanked by more whitewashed houses - but of quite different architecture to those on Santorini. Murray and I opted to walk back down to the village of Skala, the walkway was built from stones - like cobbles but very undulating - we had to watch every step - it was still worth the walk though. Rain set in during the late afternoon, hopefully it will be all over ...
