    ... closest ate one sandwich and 60 per cent of the second one. He was a Mormon from Sao Paulo, which I thought seemed strange, until I looked closely at the champions' wall and realised that there were a lot of Mormons there, with their name badges and their books and a huge plate of food. It seems that maybe Mormons have a proclivity for competitive eating I had never previously suspected.

    ... br> Guide: Did you know England played here?
    Us: Yes, it was the only match we didn't lose.
    Guide: At least you didn't lose 7-1.
    Us: No, but to be fair, we didn't play Germany.

    That's about it for now. If I haven't written about the food this time it's because we are continuing to eat marvellously well on rice, beans, pork, steak, cheese bread, local cbeese, cakes, tropical fruit, and Paul's new favourite, corn-based semolina.

    ... yesterday.

    Today we went to Belo Horizonte Zoo, which is just outside the town. It was very odd in that there wasn't a carpark. People just drove into the zoo and parked anywhere they liked. So there were parked cars all along the roads by the animals. There was also no picnic area, the whole zoo was one big picnic area, so we spent the whole time dodging traffic and stepping over families stuffing their faces.

    ... other odds and ends are lying around, traditionally eaten for Saturday lunch at the end of the working week. On Saturday lunchtime we went to the central market to a famous restaurant called Casa Cheia to eat this. We had to queue up for about half an hour, but it was well worth the wait. Fortunately the traditional offal and gubbins were replaced with chunks of pork and delicious sausages, served with rice, chips and kale. Portions were huge.
