Wilderness was a short, one-night, stopover. Our guesthouse was comfortable and the little village in which it was situated was quaint. This was a nice place to walk the beach and have dinner. We ate pizza and calzone at a great Italian restaurant while watching the Italy vs. New Zealand match.

We left Kruger Park and drove through spectacular rolling landscapes to the SA capital of Pretoria, where we briefly saw the impressive main parliament building and presidential residence. We then carried on to Johannesburg airport for our third and last time where we boarded a plane for Port Elizabeth on the southern coast.

Our only night in P.E. was spent in a hotel on the Indian Ocean. Of course we had to dip our toes in the ocean in the morning before leaving ...

... it's scarily high, and still a taboo subject (many many deaths are blamed on TB or other illnesses).

On the whole I was really glad I'd done that visit, certainly not what I expected in many ways. Yes there is poverty, unemployment etc, but it seemed to lack the sense of desperation that I'd half expected to see. What I'm unsure about is whether this is unique to Knysna, or really representative of township life across the country.

... went into the museum and it became clear it was a whale's skeleton, very weird. It's well worth stopping by here actually, they have a lot of info on sea life in general as well as the history of Mossel Bay and how the Portuguese ships used to stop by there and leave letters in a tree.We had a really nice lunch in the Lighthouse Restaurant at Point Hotel overlooking the huge waves rolling in and crashing literally outside the big french windows.Neil ...
