Khao Lak, Thailand khaolak.scuba... damsels, trumpet fish, cornet fish, lion fish, scorpion fish, box fish (love these!!)... We tried to spot and name as many as we could on each dive... However, there were a couple that stick out in my mind... We managed to see 3 leopard sharks - two together on one dive, and one fairly big one laying in the sand on another... absolutely gorgeous, they look just how you would imagine - a beautiful, sleek yellow body with ...
Khao Lak, Thailand you_know_zo... hey thats not toally unexpected. now the other side of the political spectrum are starting THEIR own protests so i figure its only a matter of the time before the airports are closed again. good thing is all this instability really screws their currency which helps me. i bought a ticket to bali for march so that should be pretty cool. get out and see a place i ...
khao lak, Thailand nealinthailand... knowlegeable guides. And unexpected free things along the way. But in my haste to get out of the rainforest, and feeling clumsy in these hiking boots since I"m used to sandals for so long and kept almost tripping, I twisted my ankle over a root and heard a pop. I could move it for a second and hoped it wasn't broken. Then I told myself, no it's ok, it's fine, just stretched it. I gingerly tested it out and could walk ok. Might ...
Khao Lak, Thailand julix... going to expire. "From David and Victoria?" he asked, his voice rising to a fever pitch of excitement. "Yes." I said. "David and Victoria BECKHAM?" he spluttered...... In this English Premiership mad country, footballers are gods! Khao Lak itself is much changed from the last time we were here [pre-tsunami]. The place we stayed at in 2001 seems to have disappeared altogether. Much of the area has been completely ...
Khao Lak, Thailand parry... Market picking up supplies for the trek. A half an hour later and we hit the Pong Yaeng Elephant Camp where we endured, er enjoyed a one hour elephant ride. Pretty cool. I can take riding and elephant off my list, but frankly, 10 minutes would have done the trick--one very quickly gets the idea. Forty minutes down the road and we were at the Mae Sap Budhist Cave for some beginner level spellunking (sp ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand superg... group leader B would be with us until the cast was put on and then he would book us a taxi to take us to the hotel. Again, it seemed like the best of a bad job. So, the slab was applied, more discussion was had in Thai (this time irritatingly completely without reference to me), I paid my bill with the last of my cash and a cash sub from Oonagh (they wouldn't accept credit card!) and then I was wheeled out into the corridor, presumably to be ...
Phu Toei National Park, Thailand travellingjoolsLampang feels a lot more like real Thailand. There are very few westerners and everyone is friendly and curious to see us. We discovered the biggest and most diverse food market I have ever seen and bought 15-20 dishes to share at 5-10baht each (70baht to the pound). Items include fih souffle, chilli jam and nuts wrapped in leaves on a stick, shortbread biscuits ...
Lampang, Thailand iainandemma... a bus to the Old City. Almost immediately, we see people giving massages and I convince him we have to do it. We walk around the ruins. Sukothai was Thailand's first capital. I see the head massage lady again and she asks us to sit with her. She says she can give us a ride back. We are adopted because we look like her son and daughter and are about the same age. We agree to meet her the next day.
Sukothai, Thailand dirtyleeHere are the Ayutthaya basics: it's an old Thai capital city an hour or two north of BKK, with loads of old temples, lots in the Khmer style (with reddish stone towers like Angkor in Cambodia). It's deceptively big, so a bike was in order. Big Bertha was about 3 tons of silver steel (or maybe lead?) and had no brakes to speak of, but we had a nice day together and she held up ...
