I had really been looking forward to this port.

It wasn't that I’ve always wanted to visit Klaipeda (I’d never heard of it before) or even to set foot in Lithuania.

No. It was the excursion being offered to a former Soviet nuclear missile base that got my juices going.

Oceania’s description warned that the tour took visitors into narrow hatches and tunnels and therefore was not suitable for everyone. ...

AM - Well this has been a very quiet day for us all, except for Henris occasional yells. Went with Tomas and Monika (without Henris) to the Evangelical Lutheran church this morning, hmmm, prefer the Catholic Church as the sermon is shorter. PM - Then we had brunch at a restaurant followed by a walk in ...

AM - What, no walking today? No, it's raining hard at times accompanied by thunder and lightning, a bit scary actually. Today is a public holiday in Lithuania, it's the Feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Kretinga we firstly had a look through a plant museum in a huge glass ...

AM - Well it had to happen, pouring rain this morning but we walked through it to the Akropolis Shopping Centre which is only 2.5 kms away. Spent all day there, walking round and round viewing all the shops and cafés and perfumeries (separate from chemist) and watching some ice skaters in the centre rink. The shops were all on the ground floor with cinemas on the second floor. On the way there are some small groups of older people with little stalls selling fruit, vegetables and ...

      Klaipeda - the Museums.

... this afternoon when we looked there was just a big machine cleaning/levelling the ice. Then we got into the Old Town and found the Museum of Blacksmiths Works, a great look into the past black smithing that was done in Klaipeda. I had no idea that a blacksmiths work in the 18th-19th century was so varied; from agricultural implements to garden tools, fences for cemeteries, door handles and hinges, headstone ornaments, locks and keys, ...
