We stayed in an apartment right in the centre of Venice. It was a little strange and our host, Lorenz, was an interesting character. The first full day, we visited St Marks Basilica and went to the Doges Palace. There were amazing paintings and the kids liked the armoury and the prisons. We walked over the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge. The kids were getting tired and the rain started, so we caught a water bus. Now that was an experience - squished ...

... restaurant cars and the wonderfully charming Pierre, our cabin steward, on the continental train - all of them were brilliant and a credit to Belmond (the company that run the train). It was a really wonderful experience and one that is recommended to anyone who likes a little bit of indulgence, even if it is a one off 'trip of a lifetime' and for us hopefully it will not be a one off as we will start saving again.

... and decided the day was too perfect not to use the swimming facilities at the park so we spent a couple hours by the poolside sunbaking and swimming before heading off to our hotel. We got the bus and then got lost on our way there, walking in the complete wrong direction firstly and then back tracking for 10 minutes after asking for directions.

... restaurant we ate at last year. The rain had started to fall on our way to dinner so we opted for a table inside. We had a lovely meal, probably the best so far in Venice. Started with antipasti and a cabrese salad, then Hamish had spaghetti carbonara and James had pizza. Both Geoff and I had a scallopini and grilled vegetables. It was all very good. We opted for a gelati on the way home rather than dessert at the restaurant as they were a bit disappointing. ...
