I can hear the bells! (All my musical theatre friends may start humming the next line!!) Good Morning… but not from Baltimore instead we are in Florence!! We woke to the sound of barking dogs (guess whose alarm that is?) and then the bells of Florence which seem to be spread out across the city and various ones were ringing at various times. …

We got a late start Monday morning and arrived at the Basilica at 9:40, five minutes before opening. The line already snaked for 100 meters! As you may recall from a previous post, the Basilica was originally the private chapel of the Doge, the elected leader of the Venetian empire. We bought another bottle of wine for the night before we have to travel to ...

We did them all today – a regional, an inter-city, a regional veloche (regional high speed) and the Frecciargento (silver arrow – a high speed train from Florence to Venice). Our travels took us from Manarola to La Spezia, La Spezia to Pisa, Pisa to Florence (it was good to be back!), and Florence to Venice.

Our day started early, since the ...

... back to our hotel down the dark streets of Venice. The second night we ate at La Mascareta in the neighborhood: Castello. Thanks Genna for a wonderful recommendation! It was worth the walk and getting lost down so many back streets, truly!

And while I’m on the topic of food, lets just get this biggie (and important topic) out of the way.... I was most excited for the dinners, the red wine, and the gelato. Gelato first! I ...
