I provide this short intermezzo for the following reason: this evening we want to take the train to China, to the small border town of Erenhot.

We have been told that circumstances in China are different than what we are used to. It is not clear if i can use travelpod. It does seem clear that we cannot use facebook, google or gmail.
Beside that, we need to get Chinese sim-cards, and we have to see if we need to get converters for our cell phone chargers.

Having missed out on our long distane train adventures in India this represented our first time catching a train over any significant time. While the bullet train had been a fair distance, its speed meant it only lasted around five and a half hours. This trip was going to be different! We had spoken about our long train trip together a fair bit, but again hadn't done a huge amount of reading ahead of time on the details, idiosynchrasies etc. Fortunately ...

Although Andy lodged the paperwork on Sunday for us to leave, there was a delay. At midday we were told that the paperwork was ready but we couldn't pick it up until after lunch at 2.30pm!

The VIN numbers were inspected and our passports stamped. We said goodbye to Andy which was a bit sad. We have enjoyed his company immensely over the past 3 and a half weeks not to mention his guiding skills and his help interpreting for ...

... inside. After the vehicles were stamped out, we walked over to have the four of us, Barbara, Neville, Des and I, stamped out. It was an emotional time because we gave Andy a huge hug and farewell. He's been wonderful to us.

That’s it, we were through China.

We lined up at the entry into Mongolia and got ourselves through Immigration. Our 2 vehicles joined the throng to get into Mongolia.

    To The Border

We're headed for the border and our time in China is nearly over. It's a drive of around 350 kilometres to Erenhot, in a part of China called Inner Mongolia.

The country side has changed to open flat countryside with a lot of sand and it's windy. The road was excellent all the way to the border. There was a lot of new 4 lane highway and railway being built out this way along with a lot ...
