Closed on Sunday

Not everything goes according to plan when you travel. I arrived on Kangaroo Island, south of South Australia, on Sunday. Kangaroo Island is mostly closed on Sunday, as it turns out. I was supposed to go on a nocturnal tour, but they asked if I would wait til the next day as the weather was speculative…still! And so I wandered about Kingscote to find that all the shops, many of the restaurants and all the internet cafes were closed. And I did see all of them, because ...

I will load up the pictures once Marsha returns from her trip up to Darwin, but here is what we did over the long weekend and since then. We left the house at 6:30 am to catch the 8:30 am Catamaran over to KI. There was very little traffic along the road out there, but we did see lots of Kangaroos along the way in the fields. Not knowing how long it would take us, we did not stop, but assumed that we would see lots on the Island. Arriving at Cape ...

It's time to drive to remarkable Rocks and the Admirals Arch, at the South Western tip of the island. Great scenary as you watch lazy, sunbathing seals on the rocks. Next stop is Vivonne Bay, apparently voted the best beach in Australia in... well some years ago. White sand, sunshine and great waters...well I understand why! And that is all I have to say about that. Pictures will speak for themselves ...

... to and spend some more time. The nature is at its best, simply cannot put it down in words...various campsites in the forest are looking sooo good. Too bad we have a ferry booked. I wipped up (special dedicace Tony) some pasta and sauce behind the van to get some shelter from the wind, overlooking Blowhole Beach, the intermittent rain didnt even bother us...The views ...

... day trip to the island 11 years ago and never left. He fell in love with the place and settled down with his wife and now they have a farm, kids and a pet dog and pet kangaroo. Luckily the farm does not take up too much of his time so he does the sightseeing tours as an extra job. He had the strangest accent, a little American, a little Oz and that put together with rolling R's, I actually thought he was from Somerset, UK. He was really nice and told us loads about the ...

... across the place. They obviously all drive Toyota Landcruisers, not Hyundai Ketz's! We stop for lunch at Pennington Bay, having the whole windswept beach to ourselves. Well, except for the pod of dolphins playing in the surf! We watch them until they get bored and move around the headland. We then rattle our way to Seal Bay, which luckily is home to a colony of Australian Sealions. We pay the money and along with a few others get a tour of the beach. This is where the sealions ...

Blair is afraid of traveling on boats (but not on the super fast Marine tour boat!) and Skye is afraid of snakes, dragons, and big spiders. What message would you send to all the children of the world? Blair: "Fight the global economic meltdown!" Skye: "Come to Kangaroo Island!"

... so it looks like they have helmets and face mask. Probably one of the reasons they are almost extinct is because they only eat the nuts of sheoak plants and they only eat them with their left feet while turning the nut clockwise. Crazy! During the day we saw lots of wallabies and kangaroos, an echidna, and three koalas - all in the wild! The koalas are the cutest - they were just handing out in the trees right next to the ...

... tribes of aboriginal people, along with educational videos playing explaining different aspects of aboriginal culture and religion. After a taste of what this museum had to offer, I left wishing I could have taken in more of it. Back at the Adelaide Hilton, I reclaimed my backpack and small bag. I left my big bag there, as I would be staying there again when I return from Kangaroo Island. The bus was right on time. We took a little drive ...

... for the chooks -lucky I am not big or I would have been stuck there all day! The gardens are completely enclosed in wire and mesh so no other way to escape. After I had showered and had some lunch I went for a drive to one of the beaches and spent the afternoon, taking photos and wandering along the rocks. The island is large -155kms long by 55kms wide and has a population of around 4000. At this end of the island it is very dry and parts look quite barren but the ...
