August 21, 2009 (Friday) – Quesnel, BC (170 miles)

We arrived in the busy little city of Quesnel on Thursday to “sweltering” temperatures of 80 ⁰F. Don’t laugh, all you folks in Texas; that’s hot when you’ve been accustomed to 60 and 70 degree days. Our first stop was the Visitor Center to inquire about campgrounds and an excursion to Barkerville ...

We have completed our trip down the inside passage. Great scenery, boring ride.

I have some left over pictures from Wrangell NP to start off the pictures. Notice how small the towns are. Haines has a summer population of about 2500. Valdez about 1200.

... at one of the reststops that offered picinc tables and a perfect view of one of Canada's many pristine lakes. Unfortunatley, our picnic was short lived due to a swarm of aggresive bees that decided to join us. We quickly ran from the picninc table that was infested with bees and made our lunch on the tailgate and ended up eating in the truck in order to ensure a "pain-free" lunch.

Also, there was an attractive garden right next to the campground that you could walk around, it seemed almost too nice for the likes of us! ... Before heading towards Banff the next morning, we swung by the Jasper Lodge for breakfast. If you are willing to dig deep, deep in your pockets, it sure would be a nice place to stay. We saddled up and headed south on the Icefields Parkway. It was a fantastic ride. Snowcapped mountains everywhere, blue skies, baking hot, but unfortunately the wildlife we were hoping to see, was nowhere to be found. Well, we did see an old tired ...

... the colours of the changing leaves were really amazing - much more dramatic than in Vancouver, it looks like a real different place than in summer. There wasn't even a drop of snow on the mountains, but it started about 3 weeks after we had been.

... challenge before - a conference, Paris, hiking, summer weather, fall weather and then South Africa and heat. Yikes! I hope my layers and attempts at coordination work. I guess they have shops in Europe though, right? Anyway, stay tuned.
