Our second port of call in Brazil was Maceio, 129 nautical miles south of Recife. This relatively small city of one million was much more like a resort town while still having poor neighbourhoods. It was lined with beaches, and safe from sharks due to a reef just off the coast. They boast tides of 3 metres, so that at low tide one can walk way out to the reef in just knee depth water. Our next stop was Maceió, a city but with a beach - we just can't seem to leave the coast! We had some difficulty finding our hostel, we managed to get on the right bus from the Rodoviaria but just not get off at the right stop (the directions from the hostel where not great in our defence). ... kake, a brazileira from foz travelling together with a spanish guy. Receptionist was a very funny paulistano and there was another strange guy around, probably the one that runs the place. Breakfast was prepared by beda and really basic. But the beach was just about 6 blocks away and excellent! Warm water, nice sand and palms. So I spent some nice days on the beach with company.
