Another early breakfast after a good nights sleep, a few people look a bit worse for wear after yesterday. Breakfast at 7am and coach departs about 8.15. About a 2 hour trip along the old coast road rather than motorway, giving us some fantastic views of the Aegean coastline. Arriving in Izmir we ...

... down the countryside became greener, and the livestock returned to sheep and cows. At a village called Gulpinar we stopped for icecream and some other supplies. We saw signs to one of the ancient sights situated in the village and went to visit it, the ruins of Apollon Smitheon, a 2nd century BC temple to Appolo and Smitheon (Lord of the Mice). ... distressing, I stayed in the back with the radio on loud until we left for the Acropolis. It was only a short drive through the town, at the top if the hill the gates were locked, how disappointing.! We put the kettle and looked at the map for a plan of what else we could do if the acropolis was to stay shut all day. When we had finished our coffee, we noticed that the cable car was running, that must mean that the site is or will open. We drove down to ...

... the castle which has been turned over to a marine archeological museum. Beautiful shady walks and fascinating exhibits going back to relics from the Bronze Age. Well worth the quick visit! After quite some difficulty in receiving the hire car that we had organised we finally set off for Selcuk to stay overnight so we could visit Ephesus the following day. We get to the hotel at beer o clock and found an inviting terrace to sit on...along come ...
