The car ride to Madrid

My sleep on the couch was much more comfortable than on the bed. My shoulder felt better than the day before, but it was still not happy, along with myself. We woke early, along with everyone else in the apartment. It was our intention to leave first thing to get an early start on the road. However, Mother Nature had other plans. We were unable to head out before the rainfall began. It reminded me of summer thunderstorms at home. It poured and poured and poured for hours. We had no umbre...

Day In Madrid

We were up, dressed and ready to go by 8:15 or so. It was closer to 8:30 by the time we left. I wasn't sure that with traffic we were going to be able to make it to the car rental place by 9. But, Conrad had a vague idea of where he was going and I pointed out the signs that he wanted and we made it there by 9:05 am! No problems to note with the car, so we were off to see Madrid by 9:35 am (or so). We took the Metro into the city. First we wandered around the streets and then made our way to...

Back in Madrid, classes and normalcy!

... other day, we usually go to a museum. The other course, S and LA, as it will henceforth be called, is in its second year. After reading the syllabus, it sounded super interesting to me, and also a little CulAnth-y, so I decided to take it, and apply for a CulAnth cross listing. I figure, if I get it, then great, and if not, the course is what it is. For my Spanish university course, my options are more limited. When I e-mailed the Spanish major advisor, she ...

... Granjilla de La Fresneda, a royal hunting lodge and monastic retreat about five km away. These sites have a dual nature; that is to say, during the 16th and 17th centuries, they were places in which the temporal power of the Spanish monarchy and the ecclesiastical predominance of the Roman Catholic religion in Spain found a common architectural manifestation.[1] El Escorial was, at once, a monastery and a Spanish royal palace. Originally a property of the ...

... We then took a walk to the Reina Sofia Museum. Some of the paintings were excellent & others were silly. After an hour, we had some fries at Mc Donald's & went to the Prado Museum. The queue was short, yet it took us more than an hour to get inside it. The museum was worth the wait as there were antique paintings as old as 1000 yrs, yet they seemed to be freshly painted. The arts of masters like Picasso ...

... was the hardest because I felt lonely and unfamiliar with everything. There was CNN in English on the TV and I left it on til I went to bed. Once Dina got to the hotel the next morning everything was better. I think everyone who flew out of San Francisco got delayed somehow or another. Well my hour is up at the cyber cafe but I will soon blog about Toledo and then Barcelona! Hopefully I will catch up soon so I can write about the present haha. Ciao.

... way, as his were all really close together, and so I place a call to his dad who confirms that Chase missed his connection in Frankfurt. He can't tell me the flight # or time of the new flight, however. Chase was a bit out of sorts when he called home, I guess. Messages are left for Chase all around, and we pile into three cabs to take us into Madrid to our hotel. The cab ride itself is an adventure. The cars are ...

Vacation in Madrid

... park and had a picnic. We listened to the musicians scatt**ed on the sidewalks and ate sandwiches, muffins, cheese, bananas, carrots, donuts, and sangria. We walked around the city for a few hours to help our food settle and then went to see a movie,Little Miss Sunshine, which I highly recommend. It's the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Thursday we had plans to go eat dinn** with friends again, but I went to the train ...

... Cruised over to the sister 'Cat hostel' around the corner from the Mad and took a punt on a free concert organised by the hostels, a brilliant Spanish flamenco and jazz ensemble whose name escapes me, though there really were fantastic. Despite the neuronal destrution we suffered upon waking on this fine morning, the festivities once again got the better of us as we tucked into a few more litres of chilled Spanish ale , psychologically ...

... with line-ups and then more line-ups as we expected. We saw the sagrada familia, which is one of Gaudi´s most famous structures. We took the time to go through it, and ended up traveling up 380 stairs in a narrow passage way to the top. Stopped and did lots of other places as well, will fill in the blanks later.... So our second night in, I decided to take a ¨brief¨ stoll without my travel companion. That did not last long as ...
