... to be flowing from left to right. When you stand in the center, the river appears to flow from top to bottom and when you stand on the left side the river appears to flow from right to left. Such clever people, I can not imagine how they did that. There was a similar tapestry in the Vatican Museum.

We had a free day today as most of the tour group were heading to Lake Como for a boat cruise, shopping, and celebrity hunting. A good chance for us to catch our breath and relax as the schedule has been hectic. We wandered around the town and the hotel today. ... is probably the best that we have stayed in during this trip. We had the afternoon free as there was an optional tour to one of the islands on the lake, however we have done enough boat cruises now to last us for a while. Had a few pre dinner drinks - Julie discovered Aperole Spritzer, a mixture of a spirit and champagne - so she sampled a few of these, and we then had a lovely dinner at the hotel. The further south we travelled, the state of the Italian econmy or the impact of the GFC became more apparent. Hotels, resorts, large buildings, small buildings, housing estates, houses, all abandoned in various stages of completion. Older buildings and homes were not immune either, and fields that once were cropped now overgrown with weeds.

... warm and very hazy so couldn't see the lake at its best. differed from Lake Como as there were no lime and elm trees in abundance.

Back to Milan for our last night. Made sure we had an Italian dinner - pizza, pasta and risotto. The manager then offered us a complementary Limoncello but John partook and sculled it down.

Tired as - our Italian excursion is almost at an end.
