... the dividers was pumped out, creating a strip of land to work off of. Scaffolding was put up around the site and excavation started. As pieces of ship were uncovered they were rinsed, packaged and labeled. They were taken to another site where they were identified, preserved and added to a growing jigsaw puzzle. Putting all the salvaged pieces together took 25 years and now what’s left of the ships is on display.

Lunch was followed by a tour of the palace. This was not a strategic fortification but an extravagant renaissance palace which came under the control of King Frederik 2nd in 1560, who decided to name it after himself. His son, Christian 4th then built this extraordinary palace starting in 1599 and taking 22 years. The Palace Church is a very beautiful protestant church and is still in use. ...
