Entering Santiago

Panorama image from Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org (Click on the image to enlarge) The air is Antarctic clean compared to the oft diesel entrapped fumes of Buenos Aires. Not that the pollution takes much away from the smorgasbord of delights BA offers a tourist. However the freshness of Santiago screams 'you are at the base of the Andes and a pebble jump from the ocean' and thusly one's vision will encompass all horizons and beyond. It is as if one sees the history and culture in Santia...

Last day of vacation

We missed our day at the Ranch, due to yours truly not checking our flight tickets before booking the day trip. Let's just say it caused some problems; the solution was to go today. Our phone just rang it is our infamous guide who tells us that it is raining in Spain or Patagonia or wherever and that means rain at our ranch and that means "I wouldn't recommend you going today..." (As if we had another day available). Then he tells us there will be a 50% cancellation fee. One is not born 'this...

Hotel Orly, Santiago

For the next six nights we will be staying at Hotel Orly in the Providencia area, a fairly upscale residential neighborhood with lots of shops and some restaurants as well. Our room + bathroom is nice, not too big, but very clean. The staff is extremely helpful and the breakfast buffet tasty. It seems that most people who stay here are Americans, including one man who was on our flight to Santiago. We remember him because he started a rather one-sided conversation about skiing with the person...

And Back We Go

It is complicated to keep track of time here, Argentina has a one hour time difference with Chile, but today Chile's time goes forward by one hour on Sunday, which we were told about by another scientist at the meeting. A useful bit of information, in particular since our flight is that very same day.... We started the morning with a nice and varied breakfast buffet at our hotel, NH Cordillera. The hotel itself seems very modern and nice from a distance, but up close I thought it looked somew...

Zapallar & Environs and on to Santiago

Yesterday we drove south to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. These are respectively, the main seaside resort for Santiagans and the main port of Chile. Vina is a sprawling city of high rise condos standing shoulder to shoulder along the coast. It was packed with people jogging, bike riding, beach walking, and, later in the day when the sea fog had cleared, sunbathing on the beach. The traffic was chaotic and strangely slow. Chileans drive very tentatively and slowly, not at all what you would exp...

Mendoza to Santiago

Today we're off to a new country - Chile. Our bus was 9:45 from the bus station. We booked with TURBUS, a chilean company, and the cost was around 7GBP each with some sandwiches and a drink. We took the same route as yesterday, up to the border crossing - then the fun began. When we stopped the bus driver(s), who didn't speak english, indicated that we go somewhere, then come back. Assuming they meant passport control, we, along with an american and canadian couple header for passport control...

The big drive back

Up early to leave at 0730 but couldn't check out till then. Took us 7.25 hours to get to the airport at Punta Arenas with two very short stops, including getting fuel at Cerro Castillo (very expensive!) Think that was partly because of all the stop/go boards at the roadworks between Cerro Castillo and Puerto Natales - it'll be much quicker when that's finished and it doesn't look as though it'll be long! Returned car and checked in for both Santiago and Calama tomorrow morning. Collected by o...

Hotel Orly--great place to stay!

from Biscottina
My husband and I recently returned from Chile (end of March, 2005). We stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Orly and really liked it. The room was quaint, bigger than European hotels, comfortable bed, clean big bathroom, and good cable service. The staff was wonderful: They spoke English excellently, and were very helpful.

We arranged a 1/2 day city tour through the hotel and it was definitely worth it: our tour guide spoke English very well, was very knowledgeable and was interesting (ask for Chris if possible). The tour was at your own pace so if you want to spend more time negotiating prices of paintings in the Plaza de Armas, you can. Chris negotiated a great deal on original oil paintings for us. The craftsman mall is also a great place to get souvenirs of the trip.

We also arranged a horse-back riding trip in the Andes through the hotel. The hotel didn't actually offer this trip, but they found out who did and arranged everything for us...including pick-up at our hotel. This is a must-do activity!

An extra bonus is the cafe at the front of the hotel. We ate there a number of times because of the convenience and good food. You can sit indoors or in the open area--both with good views of the quiet, tree-lined street (unusual in this busy city).

We highly recommend this hotel!

Fine Value

Just returned from two night stay after South American cruise. The hotel was spotless and very tastefully decorated. There is a charming small conservatory-style room for breakfast. The neighborhood is extremely convenient and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Great stay,polite staff

from smfun
We stayed in hotel orly for 2 separate nights. The staff was very polite and spoke great english. This hotel is charming and clean. The matrimonial room is the best as we stayed one night in jr suite and found it smaller but it has 2 bathrooms.

this hotel has a great location and easy access to restruants and bella vista area. On the whole highly reccomend this hotel.

Providence was looking after me in 2001, guiding me to Hotel Orly, where I lived for five months. I am, to say the least, a high maintenance guest who NEEDS things a certain way. Hotel Orly has the panache of any world class botique hotel to accomodate guests like me. The guest rooms and breakfast room are enchanting, coffee is first class like the staff and the hip cafe at the front of the hotel. Behind Hotel Orly is my favourite vegetarian restaurant - El Heurto - of all my 30 years of international travels, including USA. For six months in Chile I worked like a dog and survived because of Hotel Orly and El Heurto. I can't wait to return.

The wonderful Hotel Orly.

from FredOmaha_Ne
The Hotel Orly is a great hotel for anyone traveling to Santiago. We chose a junior suite and it was very nice. The staff was outstanding and the location could not have been better. We much preferred staying at the Orly to one of the many international chains in Santiago. The location was bettter and the experience could not have been matched.

Wonderful small hotel in Santiago

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hotel Orly is a wonderful find in the Providencia area of Santiago. It is a small hotel with a rather charming breakfast area and comfortable rooms. The staff speaks English and is very accommodating. I arrived early and my room was not yet ready. I was invited to breakfast and they tried to provide me with a room sooner rather than later. The rooms and public areas are meticulously clean. The staff is very friendly and I will stay there again.

Loved the Orly

Excellent hotel, very clean, good price and excellent location.

Excellent time in Orly

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed in this hotel 6 or 7 times and I love coming back. The service is wonderful, the place is very clean and quiet and very well located. The manager greets everyone personally and will bend over backwards to help her guests. The only negative comment I would have is that the rooms are not that big, but they are very comfortable. I have been living in Chile for 3 years and have never found a hotel as good as the Orly.

Orly Hotel, the best!

from jdelugo
Just returned from 5 wonderful nights at the Orly. My husband and I both work in the travel industry and travel a lot. Our stay at the Orly was one of the most pleasant hotel experiences we have ever had. From the moment we arrived the English speaking front desk person Fransisco took care of us through our entire stay. The rooms were spacious and immaculately clean. The full breakfast served in the cosy lobby/ dining area was a joy every morning. The hotel restarant Cafetto was open every day from 8am - midnight and seemed to have a mix of locals and tourists. We are planning to retirn next yer with a group of family and freinds. ... Until then.. adios.
