... s tranquilizer! Our guide, Kostas met us at 3:00 on the dot and we headed out. We were headed to the southern end of the island, a far less touristed area. He took us along the shore route explaining the hillside terracing that is omnipresent and explaining that the majority of the green we see (which is severely limited) is grapevines. Santorini has developed quite a wine industry; the vines grow on the ground in a bird's nest shape and have adapted ...

Today we'd booked a private tour but the company cancelled it as there wasn't enough people to run the tour. Not happy Jane!!, as they never told me there was a minimum number required. In true Aussie spirit we decided to go it alone. As it was a tender port we had to get the tender from our ship to the shore, then a steep cable car up to Fira. The balcony is just what we wanted with a view of the caldera and no-one passing in front. Today we went on a boat trip to the new volcano that is growing in the centre of the caldera. It is called Nea Kameni and first appeared above the water in197BC, so about 1500 years after the massive blow out that destroyed the Minoans. It has erupted several times since ...

... There was a large American group next to us who were pretty obnoxious arguing with the waiters and complaining a lot. Afterwards we went for a walk I wanted to buy an evil eye necklace but they were around 35e and looked very flimsy so I couldn't justify it. Instead we had some gin and tonics and a choc coconut banana crepe for 30e. We got the bus back at 11pm- tix 4.4e Total 113e Steps ...

... and a glass of wine. However, once that was gone, we weren't ready to leave the view. So another glass of wine. And another. Ok, one more. We just couldn’t get enough of the view, or the local white wine. We saw a restaurant just down the hill from us called Seagull, and decided to make one last stop there.

At Seagulls, we continued with another glass of white wine, and fried zucchini. Again, we had the place almost to ourselves – I think ...
