... is riding harder than other days. The overall winner has to be consistent which means racing hard everyday.

As we were climbing up the last portion of the Col De Mollard there were quite a few fans on the side of the road. Everyone is super friendly and cheer you on. They also do a double take as they see my huge bike frame and a big German climbing the mountain:)

We took a little break at the top of the Mollard. I got some great pictures of a huge KOM banner ...

... 7 peaks. You could see how tired the riders were as they rounded the corner.

After the race was complete we changed back into our cycling outfits and began the winding decent down Lacets de Montvernier. It was fairly crowded but the flow of traffic was continual. I am glad we were able to at least go down this road to catch some great scenery.

... or head for home. By now it was almost 2 pm. We left the hotel at
8:30 am so everyone was ready to head in. As we continued our decent we had an
unwelcome surprise. The road we were supposed to take was closed due to
construction. The only way home, take a detour that involved a 2.5 mile climb
at 8-10%. So much for finishing early. By now it was so hot the road tar was
beginning to melt a bit. The melting roads made the ascent seem that much
harder and ...

... persistence and survival.

Ultimately I made it, absolutely shagged, but I was still standing unlike a stack of others who were on the roadside collapsed.

I met up with Chris at the finish, he didn;'t make the time cut on Glandon and was ferried back to the finish by bus....not happy.

So that's the Etape for another year....not so sure about doing this again. This experience was enough.
