This will be short and sweet, I have to go to bed early because we are travelling to the Mekong Delta tomorrow at 8 o'clock and I need to pack etc. We are going on a boat and I just found out today that we will be rowing through the jungle, hmmm I actually didn't know that when we signed up for it. Anyway....Ho Chi Minh City is gorgeous, the area we are in is really lively esp at night and it has a great buzz about it. We have been wandering around the old French area of the city which is rea...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam dee2000xArriving in Saigon at sparrows, we debarked the overnight train bleary-eyed and caught a taxi to the backpacker part of town in search of a place to stay. Even before 6 in the morning, touts were on the streets, hassling us to look at their hotels. We looked at quite a few (wasted too much time on mini-hotel alley, don't bother) before deciding on the Orient Hotel (which will come down in price for you). We managed to occupy a couple of days with grizzly reminders of the war; first stop was w...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam dnaHad a bus to Vietnam arranged already. But myself and Sinead decided to run over to the internet cafe for a last minute check on where we were going to stay in Ho Chi MInh. When we got back to the hotel the other girls were arguing with the receptionist about the remaining charges for our room. Apparently the price that the receptionist gave us when we were checking in was wrong. We payed 200 dollars including the 70 dollars deposit, but the girls said that our deposit was only 50 dollars. Af...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam mash.samSince we had little time in Ho Chi Minh city we only decided to book a 1 day tour to the Mekong Delta, though I would advise a 2 day tour. Had to get up pretty early that day as the bus picked us up outside the Orient at 8am. It brought us down to the pier where we enjoyed a 2 and a half hour boat ride. Was really cool seeing Ho Chi Ming city from the river, check out that photo with the houses on stilts. I did see a dead bloated rat floating upside down though didn't take a photo, sorry! :) ...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam mash.samWe're going to the Cu Chi tunnels today! very excited as looking forward to that for the last while. We got an air conditioned van that would bring us to the tunnels and then the war museum. Air con was heaven! Got a really good guide at the tunnels, the whole site is set up really well. There's different tents that showed the life of people during the war. Like how they cooked and what and what sort of traps they made for the American troops. The actual tunnels are absolutely tiny! apparentl...
Ho chi Minh, Vietnam mash.samOur trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, just outside of Ho Chi Minh, was just a half day long, but what a trip. Not only did we get to crawl through the tunnels, Niall shot a gun and there was ALOT of nasty looking GI traps to see.
The first tunnel was dug by a french guy in 1945 and the people of the area continued digging them throughout the years. Good job, cos they came in great use for the Viet Cong when the war was in full flow. Kitchens, sleeping areas ...
... be seen – when we left an armless & legless, one eyed victim of Agent Orange was begging on the streets outside the museum. It was extremely distressing to see that a war over political ideology fought over 35 years ago can still have such devastating and lasting effects of the people of Vietnam.
Following the war museum, Paul took a trip about 2 hours out of Saigon to the Cu Chi Tunnels – a 200km tunnel system were the Viet Cong (as ...
... result of mixing a whole bunch of other religions. The building itself was so darn colourful, you couldn't help but feel happy. No opression in this joint. A hoard of robed locals then treated us to a prayer session with plenty of kneeling, gongs, and soe odd singing.
The rest of the day was at Cu Chi tunnels, those used by the Viet Cong in the "American" War. Chris had been fascinated by this for a while so was excited to learn more ...
... of hawkers either. Long bus trip out and back but so amusing coming back through the rush hour traffic - some of the narrow scrapes of traffic - scooters use the footpaths when there are some if all else fails - some of the loads they carry on scooters - cages of dogs - probably for the markets for eating - a huge pile of wood - the ultimate apparently is a live water buffalo!! Just had the final dinner with Tuan guide) he has to return to Hanoi for his grandmother's funeral ...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam mbrinsdon... to overtake a bus as it was passing me. Saigon streets sure aren't pedestrian friendly! Out for more drinks that night – back to our usual place – Eden. Chris was watching TV when we ordered our second round of drinks. The waitress asked him if he wanted another ice coffee and he seemed to ignore her. She asked me if he was deaf so I told her he just didn't like girls. She said: "Is he a ladyboy?! Does he like you?" So I told her s/he (Chris) liked Andy. I think she ...
