New Years in Red Square

... hologram. We finished the day's tours with a walk around the inside of the Kremlin and then the Armoury. The boys were once again fooled here and thought that this meant lots of guns n stuff. But it was a collection of items given to Tzar's in the past. Was pretty interesting and we managed to pick up a Rory who thought it was a free tour. Time for New Years and the main reason we picked this tour. We met up with Schmo and Claire for dinner. They'd been on another ...

She seemed to believe Moscow's cultural heritage and the wellbeing of its people are neglected as no opportunity for soulless commercial exploitation is missed. She hopes to move out of the City towards St ...

The Kremlin and the Russian Miracle

trains packed, trains whistling into stations, leaving wind gusts
behind them that blow and whistle through the station. Trains are very
noisy and arrive every minute or so. Hard Rock was ok, glad I went as
it was HRC in Moscow, but food was ordinary, inside was smoky and
shop was disappointing. Lots of rain today, we were dumped on at the
kremlin and ...

... and monolithic I regretted my impatience with the overly fussy buildings I had just seen the few days before. As our van sped from one site to the next within the crowded metropolis, I saw that Moscow was still dominated by relics from the Communist era. It was almost impossible to ignore the over-sized "Seven Sisters" buildings, commissioned by Stalin to look like Gothic skyscrapers that were scattered ...

The new capital

... and in a way more 'real'. More spread out, more money around (you can see the difference in the types of cars on the roads). In general people were a bit more accepting/patient with tourists in Moscow and their were churches and cathedrals everywhere - I got used to putting on a skirt (over my jeans) and headscarf to enter - not quite sure how much of a state I looked at times but that's obviously not important. A quick mention of one challenge I had here - buying railway ...

... Kremlin & surroundings quite well but didn't see any museums. The city was too buzzing for me to waste my time inside. It was also over 30 degrees every day and by 2 pm the heat really took its stroll on me, so most days I ahd to retire for a few hours before I was able to head out again. I will definitely come back here again (and probably quite soon) as it is a city full of interesting places and I onyl saw about 10% of it. Anyway, tonight is the train to ...

Moscow

As we continued towards Moscow on the trans-siberian the scenery became progressively more European: Less birch trees and more lush greenery and grassy fields. After braving the rather confusing at first (although very visually impressive) Moscow Metro system, we arrived at Lenin Hostel - a very Soviet looking place from the outside complete with a noisy lift in a cage. The inside was basic but more than acceptable however. Our first day was ...

... my flight. This area, surprisingly, was far cooler than the first part of the airport. There were shops, and newsstands, restaurants, and random little stands where you could buy a beer to wait for your flight. I just sat and waited (like before), occasionally falling asleep for a few seconds here and there. I think I was just in shock when I first arrived. No one spoke English, and I felt like a total outsider.
