Historical Traveler Reviews Orchid Inn San Simeon
Nice Surprise
We had a great experience at the Orchid Inn. The newly renovated lobby and rooms were a pleasure. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We slept well in the comfortable beds and enjoyed a walk on the adjacent beach. Much to our surprise, they even included a wonderful, hot breakfast with the cost of our room. We would stay here again!
Great value for money
we chose this hotel off the tripadvisor reports and were very happy! we turned up at san simeon fairly late, chose this hotel, walked in through the front door and they gave us a great price - beat their own website and travelocity etc. There are two sections to this hotel - Romantic and Traveller. We paid the extra for the Romantic wing and we had a lovely, plush room with a king bed and one of their reknown fake fireplaces. (hmm other comments noted problems lighting the fire - but we just flicked the wall switch - it is a gas flame made to look like a fireplace). TV, big comfy couch and work desk. Corian bathroom - so it kinda looks like marble. good range of toiletries, big huge fluffy robes. continential breakfast included - brought to the room. tea bags, yoghurt, muffin, croissant, scone, OJ. very quiet. We had an ocean view room - but the place is not beachfront - more like ocean glimpses off in the distance, if they keep the shrubs trimmed! we got a plush room at a great price.
Enjoyed it!
We walked into the hotel, aware of the ongoing renovation to the second building, not expecting a bargain. Luckily, we did get a great deal on a room in the main building of the hotel. The main building has very comfortable beds which each had a lovely cymbidium orchid on luxurious bedding. We were pleased by the staff, and surprised in the morning with an offer for a complimentary breakfast. We would love to stay there again, should we be traveling down the scenic California coast.
Not what we were expecting
With San Simeon being so small I don't think you can be too picky about where you sleep. We chose the Orchid Inn due to comments on Trip Advisor and the location. The lobby was nice, but the room was not what we were expecting. We had the impression that this was a boutique-type hotel with views of the ocean (we couldn't see the water, but we could hear the waves crashing). The bathroom was not clean and had toothpaste on the faucet. We went to the front desk and they immediately changed us to another room. The furnishings did not match, the carpet was worn, and the room and bathroom needed serious updating. We didn't even have a telephone in our room - thought that was odd. The screens in the windows were falling out so we couldn't leave our window open to listen to the waves. Breakfast was ok - served in the bar area. I read the last review and the manager's comment. Would I stay here again - I don't know, but if the property was completely renovated, probably.
Loved the Orchid Inn at San Simeon
We returned to the Orchid Inn at San Simeon in October. We had been there previously during the Summer and had a great experience.
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast on Sunday was excellent. Fresh eggs, bacon, yogurt and wonderful fresh baked bread.
The entertainment was great. We relaxed in the lounge while listening to Allan King sing. It was a great way to end a fabulous day in the pool, tooling around Cambria and visiting the Elephant Seals (our favorite thing to do in San Simeon).
We'll continue to go back to to the Orchid Inn at San Simeon.
Heavenly
Booked the Orchid Inn for one night, paying more than we had orginally intended as we wanted a bit of luxury. Well we certainly got that!
The lobby area is lovely - classy and welcoming at the same time, the lists of eating places was super and we spent ages perusing it. The pool is beautiful with gorgeous sun loungers. Our room was lovely and well decorated (the bowl of orchids in the bathroom was a nice touch).
Our quick drink in the bar, after dinner at a local restaurant, became quite extended partly due to the entertainer Alan King, but mainly because of the lovely hostess Natalie for whom nothing was too much trouble.
One gripe was that there wasn't enough room in the lounge area for breakfast (a minor point).
A major point for the next time we visit San Simeon (well we've only done the No 1 tour of Hearst Castle), would be the location which isn't bad at all, but is rivalled by the nearby Best Western which itself is right in San Simeon Bay.
Nice surprise
We planned a trip to San Simeon and could only stay one night. Getting a reservation during the "high season" proved to be problematic because most hotels in the area required a minimum 2 or 3 night stay so we were pleased when The Orchid Inn could accomodate us for just the one night.
We were very favorably impressed. The lobby was newly renovated, comfortable and had a wine tasting area where you could sample local wines. The desk clerk was very nice and helpful and made us feel like important guests.
Our room was upstairs and consisted of a king bed with a fireplace and jetted tub. The views of the ocean were beautiful and except for crashing waves, quiet.
The room was renovated recently and still smelled a bit of paint but it was nice and clean as well as cared for.
The location can't be better for touring San Simeon.
Sunday morning featured full breakfast for two in their lobby. We noticed that there was also an indoor pool and families with children enjoyed that feature. They also have a spa but we couldn't use it this time as we had to get back.
We will definitely go to The Orchid Inn again.
Good Vibes
We picked out the Orchid Inn as looking about the best out of a long line of rather depressing looking motels. Unfortunately we could only stay the one night on 8 June but it really was a lovely place to stay over. It had recently been refurbished and our room was large, comfortable and equipped with fridge as well as the usual iron and hairdryer. The staff were very helpful and the comfortable front lobby had a book with a list of local restaurants, with their menus, which we very much appreciated after a long drive. We would have liked to pick it up and take it with us.
Best Place in San Simeon/Cambria Area
The Sea Coast Lodge used to be two buildings, but is now comprised of the flagship, The Orchid Inn at San Simeon, and the Sea Coast Lodge. This review is of the Orchid Inn at San Simeon.
The Orchid Inn, as the main site is now known, is amazing! When you walk into the lobby, you feel like you are stepping into exotic luxury with plush chairs and couches giving the space a subtle lounge atmosphere. Passing through you come to the breafast / wine and cheese area where a piano music system is set up for recorded and live entertainment by Allan King (he sounds just like Nat King Cole). This area overlooks the pool through a glass wall. The pool has a fireplace, several lounge chairs, and tables to enjoy snacks and sunshine. Our room was tastefully decorated with color accents of orange, bronze, and green with two plush robes set out for our use. The mattress was extremely comfortable and plush, while the sheets and goose down comforter felt like 100% heaven. The in room fireplace added extra warmth and a nice romantic touch which we used to cap off the evening. Our south facing room had a partial ocean view. My wife's favorite part of our trip was her relaxing and soothing massage in their serene spa room. We'll be going back!
