After my morning hike in Wanaka I grab my luggage and walk a couple of blocks to the road out of town, and thumb a lift to Queenstown. After about 10 minutes a Russian guy in a campervan stops and says he can take me 90% of the way to Arrowtown. I hop in and he turns out to be an interesting guy, working on an oil rig in Papua New Guinea. We stop at some great view points and then cruise on down into Arrowtown. He was stopping there to ...

... and not for us. The town had character and was quite pretty with lake frontage. It has expanded and there are now hundreds of hotel rooms and holiday apartments. The country's number one tourist town. There were attractions: a gondola up a mountain, Lord Of The Ring tours, jet boats up the river, bungy jumping etc. The wind got up and it began to rain sparing us all these extremely expensive decisions. Off up a valley to Arrowtown where we were ...

We followed John down the dirt trails, over a few drops, and around hairpin turns. It was heart pounding and awesome. Sam Jackson was terrific - he took a few spills, got back up, and kept on riding. Each run took about 30 minutes, and once we reached the bottom, we loaded back onto the gondola and went back to the top. After a couple ...

... NZ pigeon but they just looked like well fat ones. Their heads were the same size at the ones at home but their bodies were the size of footballs, insane! Our last activity in queenstown was yes, the one and only, shotover canyon jet boat. The one you see on all the brochures of queenstown and Elliot, Julian and I were well pumped. The boat wasn't as big as I thought but still seated about 15. It's one of those activities that you can't really describe what it's like unless ...

    ... the distance watching me.

Again, all these years later, I brought over cheese, wine, and accouterments; laid out a bathroom towel from the hotel under a tree at the end of the peninsula that juts out onto Lake Wakatipu. I got comfortable, snacked and watched the sunset over the mountains. The tectonic Remarkable Mountains were glowing from the sun. I could see clouds forming over mountains that come from Milford Sound and ...
