10,000 steps to Junagadh

We awoke this morning at 4 am. This time is wasn't the incessant horns from the traffic outside that woke us nor was it a near by mosque blaring out Adhan, calling people to pray, it wasn't even, and this is my personal favorite, a power cut, which stops the air con/ceiling fan making the room hotter than a tandoor clay cooking oven. This time it was intentional, this time we were happy to wake this early (slight exaggeration) because we had ...

Famous in Gandhidham

... chanting and cheering and having to dance in a different fashion all of which is bound to cause huge embarrassment and is way too extrovert for me. ‘Neh, Neh Neh’ I repeat once more but this only recruits more reinforcement to grab me. In China 4 years ago I had a whole nightclub banging their bottles and chanting for me to get up to dance to Michael Jackson and I bailed it but after I kind of regretted it. It would have been very embarrassing but also it probably ...

Sasan Gir Safaris

... park, which was nice. We heard that the animals from the Park often wander onto the Lodge's grounds. The night watchman brought a strong floodlight with him to sweep it over the grounds. There was nothing there at the time, but he promised that he saw something he'd come get us. He never came, so we guess nothing wandered onto the land. We drank coconut milk out of the coconut. Sadly, it wasn't chilled. Refreshing nonetheless.

Jamnagar to Sasan Gir

... The hotel is called Mane-Land (ha, ha, ha- get it?) Jungle Resort. We watched the stars and Eric spotted a satellite. We were all amazed at how fast it went. Aman: We had another long day in the car. On the way, we stopped at a beach that looked heavenly, as it was really hot. We swam and got sand in all kinds of places we didn't want to get sand in. We arrived in Sasan Gir National ...

Marine National Park, Narara Beach

... we walked up to them (well, onto the levy, they were in the water,), They started flying away! Janpal and Eric got some National Geo class pictures and movies. On the beach, though, we hit at low tide, when the water probably recedes about a mile the beach is so flat. We saw all kinds of life that would be at the bottom of the beach during high tide. There were Hermit Crabs, laying their trails in the sand, and the larger ghost crab, which is sand ...

Delhi to Ahmedabad to Jamnagar

... earlier the night before. Mommy says, "That's India." The flight itself was only an hour long. It was hot and there were a few bumpy roads, which were a recipe for disaster. I threw up next to Mommy in the farthest back seat. We were in a van. I had a hot shower at the hotel and felt much better. The hotel was called the Hotel Express Residency and was a little outside Jamnagar. Aman: Well, Janpal said it. Today was one huge car ride. At ...

Wild Ass

We met up with Anna's friend Anna and her boyfriend Jamie in Ahmedabad and travelled on with them to Dhrangadhra in order to visit the Wild Ass Sanctuary in Little Rann. This is a largely barren desert like area with some interesting wildlife. We stayed one night in Dhrangadhra and then one night in Mud Huts near the sanctuary. Dhrangadhra is a funny little town which obviously doesn't have many tourists, so ...

... coming out into view are Naga Sadhu's showing their ability with bamboo sticks and swords. It is the Sadhu's that will parade around the procession, which weaves it way around a planned route that is filled to the brim with people coming to celebrate Shiva and also if lucky to get a blessing off a Sadhu. Sadhu's are people that have given up all their possessions including clothes, covering themselves only in ash and relying on charity as their only means to survive. People ...

Porbander, Junagadh-burning thighs and a sore head

... on my mind but the entrance isn't far off from featuring in such a film. The steps seem infinite as they fade off into the darkness, there is a cool breeze but the air is stagnant and smelling of bat droppings, even so I wanted to explore. Coming in from the bright sunlight didn't help matters and I spent the majority of my time literally blind, gingerly testing the ground ahead of me with every step. I make it down to the bottom to be greeted by rats and a huge ...
