... attempted to destroy the evidence of their existence, as well as the vast majority of the wooden dormitories there which were taken down due to dilapidation over the years in fear that tourists of the sight may get hurt. In some of the buildings are displays of the piles of possessions of those killed such as suitcases, spectacles, Jewish prayer shawls and a very large mountain of hair that was shaved off the women in order to be used in textiles. Gruesome to say the ...
Oswiecim, Southern Poland, Poland brandon_t... journey with a few weeks in Asia, we had originally planned a few months but we are really keen to get going in Australia and see our new home for the next few years. So a few weeks Island hoping to Australia sounds like a good plan, we may live to regret flying budget but as ever less money means more time on the road. With a rough plan for the future it felt like the last stage of our European tour was now underway, once we toured south Poland and Warsaw to visit my relatives we would be ...
Oswiecim, Southern Poland, Poland pihollandI found myself alone most of the weekend starting with our time in Auschwitz--just walking around and spending time my myself and doing my own thing, experiencing everything how I needed and wanted to experience it. In such a dark and diabolical place, I think it was necessary for each person to experience it in the way he needed to experience it and allow it to ...
Oswiecim, Southern Poland, Poland mmcgraw001... reading another book, the novel Jakob the Liar by Jurek Becker (in translation from German). It's about a Jewish ghetto during WWII. We'd avoided the movie with Robin Williams because of bad reviews, but I though that the original novel might be worth reading. Laura appreciated the novel more than I did (I thought some of the attempts at humor didn't work), but it was worth reading, particularly because of its unique narrative style. Tomorrow we'll head to Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter.
Oswiecim, Poland tmat... left before I left Poland for a while and having just finished a book about Polish history I knew the time was right. Following some minor transportation issues with either a dodgy bus or a terrible driver (I'm not sure which) we arrived at the Auschwitz museum soon after 3pm. We were about an hour and a half behind schedule, which gave us just over three hours to explore the camps. Certainly not enough time, but better than nothing. Before I even passed ...
Oswiecim, Poland will... Spring time, warm and sunnny, the grounds are actually quite pretty. The grass is very green and little wild flowers grow here and there. When the camps were in use, they didn't look like this at all. All the grass was mud and dirt and a big mess, and much of the time it was cold and wet and even snowy. I think it would be something else to see it again in the winter. (Actually, at one point in time, it started to pour rain out if no where! Sheets and sheets ...
Krakow, Poland misschristie... complain. Night one was turning out to be better than I had imagined. I just wanted to get something to eat and have a drink maybe, then sleep so that I can make it to work early. But it was 2AM and I was just getting started. Anyway, eventually left CK and wanted to get back to the hotel. While looking for a cab, saw a sign that said 'Club Obsession', so decided to drop in. It was a club/karaoke bar. Not crowded, but were playing good music ...
Krakow, Poland noelk... it is a haven for tourists. 80% of Warsaw was destroyed during WWII, although Krakow was left unscathed. We had a wonderful Polish supper last night. Perogis, potatoe pancakes, and gybotkis (sp?). That is until some man tried to steal our food. Think of the old lady from Paris story. Thank you so much for reading and writing us. We love when people post. We are off to see the World Cup final! Love Chris & Katie
Krakow, Poland chriskatie... to visit the buildings, gas chambers and crematoriums. While most of Auschwitz 1 is how it was at the time, Birkenau was mostly destroyed as the fleeing Nazis tried to blow up and burn the evidence as they retreated. Towards the end of the war the crematoriums could not keep up with the burning of bodies and there are places in the nearby woods where huge bonfires of human corpses were burnt. Around your feet on ...
