Drove to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia this morning. Had a city tour (walking) with a local guide-a young girl who was very sweet. A lot of the city was destroyed in an earthquake so it's not as old as you would think-just made to look older. But still a nice city. Visited a church and the local markets. Then had some free time so checked out the shops. They are well known for a particular brand of crystal-so checked it out-but the only ones I remotely liked were €600!!! Don't think...
Zagreb, Croatia ka.duncanWas feeling a bit down. tour hasn't been that great people-wise (apart from the lovely aussie family) though sights O.K. Every tour I have been on have been very lucky in that pretty much all the people have been pretty great. And Zagreb is a bit yuckky. Some people wished me happy birthday at breakfast which was nice and had a cool birthday message from my sis on the phone when got back to my room (poor mum's phone was down so she couldn't ring). Went on an optional excursion this morning an...

... to the history books. A few hours of napping did good, and by 6PM I was ready to head out for some beer and food, and since the fever hadn't resurrected, anything could happen tonight. It was saturday afterall. It had been raining all day here in Zagreb, threatening the city's saturday night, but we're gonna take a chance anyway. I met Rui at the main square, which is a rather small but very important part of town. Its the center of town, the main shopping street (Ilica) runs ...
Zagreb, Croatia dhruvk... all over his face. Anyway, natural beaty in the park was marvelous and I understood why the number of Japanese tourists was increasing especially these days. I saw a lot of signs written in Japanese. My cousin also chose Croatia for his honeymoon destination and I believe it was a good choice.
When I got back to Zagreb, as always, I hadn't booked a hostel. Fortunately, I had happened to see a sign of a backpacker's hostel in the train station. So I headed for ...
... I spent about 3 hours there and am still none the wiser whether the art is fake or not, but it was interesting nonetheless. Just to note, I passed up the opportunity to visit the Croatian National History Museum with it's exhibition on the Megalodon to go here instead! It was after I had exited the museum that the incident of the trip occurred. As I boarded the tram, I was suddenly accosted by a mean looking ticket inspector with random black hairs sprouting from her chin, who only ...
Zagreb, Croatia emmab... from the lack of sleep in Krakow and Budapest I felt ready to explore Zagreb. As I had already taken my "traditional" aimless walk the day before (in the residential area around the hostel and in Maksimir Park) I went directly to an oriented walk in the city center. I got a map at the hostel reception and headed to the main square. As a matter of fact, I didn't expect much of Zagreb and maybe for that reason I got rather impressed by the old city (or upper city as they call it ...
Zagreb, Croatia gbasilio... a very interesting experience, bloody ingeniuos how they distill it and boil out the gruppa. while you are waiting for it distill they took me into the cornfields to pick a corn each so we could roast them in fire, so tasty and yes it was accompanied by 3 more shots of gruppa, I struggled everytime but they drink it like water, even Ivvys cousins who are only 10 an 12, made me look like I d never drunk before. Any way whilst we were doing this, his aunty had made ...
Zagreb, Croatia bwongstar... sprung up at the first word that began with a V (and sounded how I thought it was suppose to sound). I left for the terminal where I thought the bus would be and the group of the wide-eyed youngsters stayed behind. I admit I was happy to see them stay put and waved with my huge rucksack in tow as I walked by. It was a perfect ending to Zagreb -- the sound of children laughing, giving me hope that even the most animated innocence can lighten the dimmest of bus stations.
Zagreb, Croatia tahazen... in the Lonely Planet guide. We checked out the flower and fruit markets and got quite lost wandering the lovely winding streets. When we finally found it we realised we were already at the top of it- it was quite small. We eventually got around to lunch after three and then walked around the city more, taking lots of photos. Zagreb's a funny place- I can't work out what it is about it that makes me think that, but all in all I like it a lot. Next stop, tomorrow, Split.
