It’s a fertile area divided into various plots with different owners, most of whom are growing date palms.

There’s an ingenious irrigation system that allows water to be simply diverted from one channel to another, so nothing will dry out in the intense heat.

We stopped at one man’s date plot and sampled some dates that had just been picked. They were delicious, very moist, but ...

After checkout and breakfast we took a bus to Abu Dhabi. The region between the cities is very industrious. I counted 4 refineries, 1 water treatment centre, 2 power plants, 1 desalination facility and many warehouses. 1 hour a 10 minutes later we were there. Off to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia tomorrow. An around about route because of lots of restricted airspace, should be interesting.

This creates a truly diverse cultural milieu unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Ex pats coming to work there from Europe or the US make more money than they could imagine in their own countries. Homes, drivers, maids, health care, and children’s schooling are all paid for, plus they make excellent and completely tax-free ...

... really knows what it is. I have really enjoyed Dubai but having now spent the day at Abu Dhabi I would love to spend a lot more time there. It is a very different world, Dubai seems maybe a little ostentatious and over the top whereas Abu Dhabi seems like it hasn't quite caught up yet even though Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE. Both are relatively new cities but boy they have achieved amazing things in only 41 years. Last day tomorrow, let's see what it ...
