Historical Traveler Reviews of Omni Detroit Hotel

Never Again!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I booked this hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews and the available photos. What a disappointment! Upon entering the hotel I noticed that the large Omni rug in front of the front doors looked as if it hadn't been vacuumed in a week. The front doors needed a good cleaning and painting. The room size was adequate but again, needed painting. There were a lot of scuff marks on the wall. We were meeting family in the lounge before going to dinner. The bartender was friendly but he appeared to be somewhat lost behind the bar not only in making the cocktails but in the use of the register. The floor needed a good sweeping. No key to the mini bar and when we called down to get one it took 30 minutes. There seemed to be a lot of staff sitting around when a lot of cleaning could have been done. Too messy and dirty for our taste. Not typical of an Omni hotel.

Disappointing

This hotel does not live up to the build up. The neighborhood is bordered by burned-out warehouses so you feel trapped once you finally get there. The rooms are ok, but just barely. Having crown molding and chair rail is great, but if they never get dusted it it loses its appeal. Also the grates in the ceiling were all filthy and caked with many years worth of dust. The shower provided only a trickle of water. Yes, it is nice being on the river, but the view is industrial Windsor-not especially appealing. It seemed like a big imposition for the peson at room service to take my order. The food was ok, but was served with two cloth napkins that were both damp/bordering on soaking wet as if the dryer broke. My soda arrived as requested, but without a glass or straw. What upscale hotel expects you to drink from the can?? This hotel is trying to be snooty, but is missing the mark by a mile. Take your business to the suburbs. This place has no redeeming qualities.

Great Hotel

Me and my girl freind stayed here for 2 nights in January for the Auto Show. We also stayed at the Pontch and the RenCen, and this was by far our favorite hotel. It is off the beaten path which is nice. Has awesome rooms and views. The only thing we didnt like was that the parking guys were very slow to bring your car around, even though the parking lot is very close. I will come back to this hotel again next year.

Quiet & Romantic place

from A TripAdvisor Member
For the second Thanksgiving weekend in a row my husband and I have chosen to stay at the River Place. The decor is really lovely and gives it an inviting & romantic feel - vs. the usual four white wall look of most hotels. I must say, this hotel is one of the very few where you could just enjoy staying in your room and relaxing or watching television... We plan on keeping this little love nest as #1 on our list of favorite hotels while in Detroit.

Good place - between 3 & 4 stars

Stayed here only one night and didn't use many of the offerings, so my review is favorable yet limited. The hotel had one of the friendliest staffs I've ever encountered. Given all the reviewers on these types of websites who have staff complaints, this is not a minor compliment. The staff always had eye contact and a warm greeting. When my room wasn't available upon check-in, and then wasn't ready in the 5-10 minutes first indicated, the woman at the reception desk actually (found someone to cover her and) went upstairs with me to find out about the delay. Then, she actually helped the housekeeping staff so that my room could be done a few minutes earlier. When I asked another staff member about the location of my meeting room, he actually escorted me there! When is the last time anyone did more than point?!? I was given a mini-suite (by those sponsoring my trip), which was wonderful - but therefore I can't comment on the size of a regular room. (But the room and hotel in general were clean.) And so I also can't comment on whether this place is a good value. The neighborhood is undergoing improvement, so I'm not as positive about the area opposite the water as another reviewer. But there is a convenient shuttle to downtown and casinos.

Definitely unique

Stayed at the Omni River Place over the 4th of July weekend. Must confess, it was not quite what I'd expected. I'd noted it boasts a AAA 4 diamond award. In my experience having stayed at numerous AAA 4 diamond award winning hotels - this one didn't quite stack up. The room was fine - the very high ceilings help make it feel more spacious than it actually is. The tall windows overlooking the Detroit River are great, and the river view was really lovely. But there were little bugs on the very expansive windowsill/windowseat (and I noted dead bugs on the floors on the landings and stairs as well). Our room could have used a good dusting, the shower rod was so bent and mangled we could hardly slide the shower curtain over it, the shower head was low and couldn't be adjusted, the coffee maker had to be removed from the armoire and taken to an outlet to be used, there were no coffee condiments, and the "valet parking" consisted of one young woman who doubled as bellperson, and who was gone by the time we got in that night (after 11:00 p.m.), causing us to "valet park" ourselves but still incur the $18.00 "overnight parking" fee. But there were good things to say as well - the bathroom was very pretty and roomy, the architectural details (moldings, friezes) were well done, there's a nice patio on the river. It was truly a unique experience - we certainly weren't terribly inconvenienced, and slept quite well. Still, I'll probably investigate other hotels next time we're staying in Detroit.

Wonderful Old world hotel, Friendliest Staff!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We got a little turned around arriving in Detroit on a winter night.

Called the hotel and the Bellman, Richard, talked us through the turns to get to the hotel. He actually drove to the main intersection and escorted us in. Beautiful old world feel to the place. If you are looking for that type of hotel, as opposed to steel & glass, this is a perfect spot. Every staff person we had contact with was very friendly.

We stopped in the dining room late after a show for dessert. They were getting ready to close. Not only were we not rushed, but they went out of their way to be welcoming and engaging. The hotel is child-friendly..our 8 year old received a kids welcome pack upon arrival and he absolutely loved the 3' wide window ledges under 10' windows in our room (he made a bed a slept there!). We can't wait to go back!!

Very enjoyable stay

If you have to be in Detroit in January, this hotel will make your stay more tolerable. It's an old building on the river that's been renovated. Rooms have an old world feel to them. The hotel has a gym and a 20 yeard lap pool about a short block away. It's a shame it's not right in the hotel, but nice to have access just the same. The food in the restaurant was very good both for breakfast and dinner. Overall, service at the hotel was great--very friendly and helpful staff. If you have business in downtown Detroit, it's about an $8 cab ride away, but well worth it to stay in this hotel!

Its not your typical omni

Beautiful location on river with views of Windsor, and tucked in a neat section of loft condos. The lobby was a nice welcome but that was about it.Found my room "dingy" heating unit was very loud, ceiling water stained, and not the standard other omnis have set.Shower , was comical pipe exposed - no pressure at all, literally had to get out and get water from sink to get shamppo off my hair.I went to lobby and informed them of situation. Was told that they would send someone to look at the problem.Following morning same problem-

Loved the Omni Detroit River Place

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently stayed at the Detroit River Place and found it to be absolutely beautiful. The renovations are magnificent and the view is excellent. I could sit in my room and watch the frieghters go silently by. Very relaxing. The only downfall is you have to walk across the parking area to get to the pool and parking is limited. Valet is suggested.
