After settling in to our flat we
walked out through the main central Zagreb area and up to the
Cathedral which is all quite impressive. Zagreb has many grand
vistas and magnificent buildings but it is all just a little rundown.
Still a very interesting city and we are looking forward to
exploring further

... Zagreb from the top looks a lot like an Italian city with all of its red roofs and Churches. After I came down the stairs I realized I might have taken them a little too hard as my thighs were REALLY hurting. Which is sort of weird because I’ve been exercising and walking a lot most days, but oh well. I took the tram back to Xiaojie’s apartment and hung out for a bit.

Then I went to Chinese class! We’d talked earlier over lunch ...

... to our halfway point in Villach, Austria. Waking up to a man shouting at you in Croatian telling you to get off the train is quite frightening, but we made it to where we needed to go! We waited in Austria for three hours, and passed the time by playing cards in the train station. Our train was delayed by half an hour, but finally at 4:45am we got on and slept through the last four hours of our train ride, and woke up in Italy! ... young American girls, first time backpackers, had such an amazing attitude towards travel, life and opportunities. They were best friends and were just happy to be traveling through Europe in each other’s company and not complaining one bit about the tough situations that backpacking brings. In fact, they were thriving in it and teaching us all lessons along the way. I can tell that they are destined for some amazing journeys and I wish them all the luck in the world.
