Haridwar - our favourite stop so far is a holy Hindu site on the Ganges. Due to the HORRIBLE bus ride from Chandigarh (six hours, 30+ degrees, no AC, no toilet) we decided to check in to the best hotel in town for a night to recover. It was right on the Ganges with it's own private ghat (bathing area in the Ganges where Hindus wash away their sins), massive comfy bed with clean sheets which seems to be something of a miracle in India!! We somehow got involved in the very important Ganga Aarti...
Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India michelle_austynAfter spending two nights in the crazy wonderful madness that was Old Delhi we travelled north for a bit of peace. Haridwar was recommended to us, and after consulting our treasured Lonely Planet guide we were sold. We got the train from New Delhi station at 6.50am, after fighting with our backpacks (sure they're getting heavier every day!). The Chair Car train we chose was an amazing first experience. The station itself was a pleasure even though it was extremely busy - we were pointed to ou...

Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India ulka... for some 20-30 minutes from Laxman Jhulla to Ram Jhulla. We made it to them temple just as the ceremony got underway. There was a lot of chanting and the scenery was very beautiful. The sun was setting right behind the statue of Shiva and it was also reflecting off the Ganga river. Quite beautiful indeed. People then took the little plates filled with ghee and flower petals, lit the wicks and set them afloat down the river. There weren't many people there that day so ...

Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India ulka... by the Nepalese cooks made for a warm and spicy ending to the day. Our first day trekking, guided by Kundan was up to the peak of Chandrashilla Mountain at 4000 meters. The rock path put in by the India Government made the going smooth, but the altitude proved challenging for most of us. (Who would have thought that I had run the Shut-In Ridge Trail Race only five months ago?) We were happy to reach the highest Hindu Temple in India to which many Indians ...

The tourist. Part of the yogi way of life here ...

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India vague-abondingQuick update from Rishikesh! We made it (although the drive was terrifying). Our hotel is SUPER nice (especially for only 300 Rs, which about $7), with a view of the ganga (what they call the Ganges) and everything! And a shower, so nice! I can't post pics from here, but basically, the ganga looks like the mississippi.... lol. I'll post more detail later, but last night we I has ...
