Haridwar - Holy Hindu City on the Ganges

Haridwar - our favourite stop so far is a holy Hindu site on the Ganges. Due to the HORRIBLE bus ride from Chandigarh (six hours, 30+ degrees, no AC, no toilet) we decided to check in to the best hotel in town for a night to recover. It was right on the Ganges with it's own private ghat (bathing area in the Ganges where Hindus wash away their sins), massive comfy bed with clean sheets which seems to be something of a miracle in India!! We somehow got involved in the very important Ganga Aarti...

Haridwar, the hindu capital

After spending two nights in the crazy wonderful madness that was Old Delhi we travelled north for a bit of peace. Haridwar was recommended to us, and after consulting our treasured Lonely Planet guide we were sold. We got the train from New Delhi station at 6.50am, after fighting with our backpacks (sure they're getting heavier every day!). The Chair Car train we chose was an amazing first experience. The station itself was a pleasure even though it was extremely busy - we were pointed to ou...

Haridwar is a holy city and if you don't have time to go to Varanasi that might be the place to visit. The train from Delhi takes about 5 hours and costs about $8 (people after 60 have 50% discount!).

In Haridwar you may:

- observe Ganga Aarti every day at about 6.45 pm;

Namaste

Wow. I truly feel like I am on the other side of the globe. India is such an incredible and different place...it even smells different. Oh the smells. Cow ****, burning cow ****, Indian food, incense, flowers, garbage...all mixed together equals the smell of India. It's actually not as bad as it sounds... I'll start from the beginning: We had a lovely flight on Qatar Airlines (a fantastic airline if you are ever traveling though the Middle East) and we had a layover in Saudi Arabia. At ...

... I must say the climb was hard, harder then the yoga classes. I think the best thing was the little cafe that overlooked the Ganga river. I shot a short little video from the cafe. I did get to see a different kind of monkey. Had no idea there where more then one kind in the area.

... to celebrate the end of winter (although the weather certainly hasnt seemed very 'winterish'!! anyway we were attacked by the colours the second we stepped outside our hotel and within seconds were covered from head to toe, our mouths, ears, eyes and hair were coated but it was just sooooooooooo funny that we really didnt mind!! however the fun was stopped only after about an hour ...

... against the infinite number of flies that teemed over her body, all searching for the source of the intoxicating aroma of rotting flesh and blood in which they could lay their eggs. Though it was only after a couple of visits that I was made aware of this, as I watched the mother of the family dig into the now truly repulsive looking leg with a stick and start to pull out maggots from deep within. I have often wondered how queasy I would be when confronted by ...

Day 02

... volley ball. While the whole group was busy we had nothing much to do, so we sat lied down on beach and enjoyed the volleyball game, in the sun.   After the game the teams went to the upper camp for some more activities such as Australian walk and stepping stones. We were left with nothing much to do, so we sat down at our favorite place, the stream for a bath. It was fun with vijendra doing water yoga and harry trying to fight the current of the ...

... the easiest to achieve. The second week saw far more improvement than I had hoped for in such a short space of time. When I finally left, I was beginning to hold some of the more difficult postures (I was particularly pleased to manage the Peacock - balancing on the hands, body parallel to the ground; it can cure leprosy, if Ram is to be believed (assuming you still have the necessary body parts to pull it off) - if only for 15 seconds or so), and could stretch ...
