Delightful Delphi

Up early to catch a tour to delightful Delphi. I had memories of it from last time I was here over 30 years ago and wanted H to see it. Our guide was a diminutive and very knowledgeable lady named Aspa, and I tried valiantly to note down much of what she said. She took us through the centre of Athens then on north through Thiva to Delphi.

There are several plains to the north and west of Athens separated by mountains and these seemed to be quite fertile ...

Ye gods(2),,,,(cont.)!
Day... (Giving up on this - no longer accurate as have failed to count no. of days spent some places!)

So nice, we decide to spend another day here. Lyn wants to go and look around the town, and I am keen to get my boots on and do a bit of proper walking. It's a fine day and there is a short-ish trek up to the Throne of Apollo up behind the town.
I set off in fine fettle: excellent path ...

Ye gods(2)!!!
Day 17 We decide to head south too. Even if wet, big city can offer many distractions, we reflect. Get robbed by motorway bandits (in booths!) Bit of a low-point this - not what you expect in Greece. Scarcely seen the sun: but road is very fast and smooth and it does begin to dry out the further we go. Hopes secretly rise... Just after Lamia, turn off to look for memorial to Leonides, heroic Spartan leader of 300 who held off massive army of Xerxes at ...

Delphi: The gods favorite place on earth.

... blue water- the Gulf of Corinth. Second, people used to make pilgrimages to Delphi because there were Oracles who lived there who spoke for the god Apollo. That is pretty darn interesting! Third, Ancient Delphi ruins are situated on the slope of Mount Parnassus. The ruins are terraced on the side of the mountain and at the top of the ruins where the stadium is, when you look down you can see all the ruins: including the theater, the temple, lots of small ...

... and reminds me of Halloumi cheese from Cyprus. Kim took the opportunity to visit a sweet shop and get a box of assorted Baklavas. Kim and I also found a wonderful Greek rug to bring back to the UK. Time had slipped away from us and before we knew it we were late to head back to Athens to drop off the van. If we did not get it back to the car rental ...

... and we also saw the remains of palace of Mycenae with the famous "Lion's Gate". It was atop the most beautiful mountain, and the view of the lower valley and Agean sea was incredible! The afternoon topped off at a whopping 110 degrees farenheight, but luckliy there is no humidity and there was a great vreeze on top of the mountain, so it wasnt as bad as you would think. After Mycenea, we had lunch, and hopped back on the bus to head ...

The Oracle of Delphi

... had to re-enact one of the races in slow motion - which will of course have Chariots of Fire added to it upon our return. Although the artifacts were impressive, I thought the scenery was even better. The area of Greece we were in is very mountainous - and the mountains are gorgeous. The closest thing I can think of would be screenshots from The Lord of the Rings movies. Magical, mystical mountains - darkened by lush forests and runs of ...
