... on the bus joined in with the shouting (not too good for the hangovers) and then the police came over and told the bus driver to drive us all to the police station.

We were outside for about 2 hours until someone had the presence of mind to check the woman's shopping bags. Quelle surprise - the purse was in there and we left. The woman was not with us though... I suspect she may be spending a little time in ...

Day 140 - SA, Durban - Brumbies v Sharks

... and having a quick snooze we headed out for a wonder. Our hostel was located near U Shaka, a massive amusement park on South Beach, so we headed up the coast checking out the various market stalls that line the boardwalk. Public pools cram the space between road and beach. I think we passed about 5. My only theory for there being so many is that you're not allowed to swim along most of the beach, only at lifeguard points between the flags which I find ...

Sabbath in Durban

... In the evening we went back to the van Belkum's. Neville Smith came over, too, and we just had a great time talking and socializing. We talked about expansion of some LifeNets projects in both this country and Zimbabwe. One was for goat-raising, more scholarships, habitat and water. Tomorrow we will have a formal LifeNets trustee meetings and discuss these further.

... security prison for leading political activists such as Nelson Mandela. Today, the island is a protected area, and the former prison is a museum. I was told by John and Melanie that the tour guides for the island are all ex-prisoners. I spent Thurs. and Fri. last week with the children in the Transition Home providing daily care. Here are two more of the children in the home awaiting ...

D-Urban-Casco-Land Experience

... to get to the sea a few times a week - mostly early morning or evening when the sun allowed for more than 15mins before you burnt. Durbans sea is warm enough and safe enough to swim in (shark nets and lifeguards for protection), but still the currents and strength of the waves means it's more of an invigourating jumping about than 'proper' swimming. I think our best beach exercise came on the last day of the festival ... also Ali's ...

On to Durban

... At the same time, I have to retrieve my luggage, go through customs and transfer to the domestic terminal. Not impossible, but it is going to be difficult. Taking a lesson from other late travelers, I go to the front of the customs line (bypassing about 100 people) and pleaded my case to the supervisor. At first he is a grumpy and won't let me pass the line. But then the guy standing at the front of the ...

... people here. The communities were very poor and though it was easy to romanticise the situation due to the beautiful surroundings; life in transkei is harsh. Aids is rife, and employment is shockingly low. Here, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, left to fend for themselves. I have spoken a lot about politics since I've been here; to white, black, coloured, asians, (don't get offened but any of the above labels, they are the p.c. terms here, and ...

Zulu learning in Durban

... a really beautiful spot, but my camera battery had died and I didn't realise, so there are no pictures I'm afraid – you'll just have to take my word for it! The hostel here is empty other than two German girls who are leaving in a couple of hours, so it's very quite. I went for a bit of a swim in the sea and got knocked over quite a lot as it's so rough. I was going to try and surf a bit, but I can't even swim in it without getting dragged under so I think ...

Warming up in Durban

... in the sea, but Anne found it too cold so stayed on the beach in the sun! Yesterday we went to the Victoria Street Market which is in the Indian area of the city. Durban is actually home to the largest Hindu population outside India (!) so really ALL of Durban is an Indian area! This market is full of Indian merchants selling African curios and we picked up a few bits and pieces there - not the best bargaining though! Walking around ...
