Beijing, Beijing, China arma2cdkey... up the air at least for a few days I think. Los Angeles is like that, it’s clearest on the days after a rain. We didn’t find the pollution to be really much worse than it is in LA.

We also noticed that toddlers are still being potty trained anywhere and everywhere. They have big holes cut in their pants (no diapers, you can see their bare butt) and countless times we saw toddlers peeing and pooping ...
Beijing, China paulfeuerborn... the standards of living are really quite high. But the bottom 1 billion is still very poor, lives on dollars a day and is not really benefiting from China's unprecedented growth. That's one of the reasons China has a very high level of inequality. But at the top and in Beijing there is a large growing society of completely apolitical well off Chinese. The result, as Josh and Jamel (and Jamel's friends Jerome and John describe) is a heavily ...
Beijing, China jimmyandkristen... luft.
Beijing, China sofieregitze... growth rates. The Chinese can travel abroad, but how many abscond? Many local officials are corrupt and reviled, but if China's communist lead**s stood in free elections they would probably romp home. A recent survey for the Pew Research Centre showed that an astonishing 86 p** cent of Chinese are satisfied with their country's direction, putting China 25 points ahead of second-placed Australia in the global contentment rankings. The US came 20th out of ...
Beijing, China happysheep... years depending on your definitions. This city has been here for millenia with different names, different layouts, and different rulers. I think it helps to put all the changes in perspective. The question shouldn't be whether this reinvention of the city should be happening but whether the way it is being done is good. The coolest (nerdiest?) thing in the museum is a giant basketball court sized scale model of the city. The model is protected ...
Beijing, China jmmadden... shopping ambiance on the nearby Wangfujing street where most of the famous fashion brands have their boutiques nowadays, and still lots of construction going on. Just a few houses besides, there is the traditional Snack street, with grilled seahorses, cockroaches and other vitamin donors!I ordered some delicious chinese dumplings, instead, with meat BBQ's on long wooden sticks!
Beijing, Beijing, China tom-of-boracay... fairly flat walking, but as you know, the wall is in a mountainous area, and soon it traced steep inclines and I was stopping every now and then to catch my breath. It is a remarkable feat, and in the area we visited, in excellent restored condition, complete with a roller coaster ride down, if you desire. I skipped it and walked back down.
Beijing, China rindy... imagine our delight when the same food we had had at lunch was presented to us again for dinner. Maybe we shouldn't have said that the food was delicious? It was leftovers and as they are poor can ill afford to be throwing perfectly good food away. It was at this point that Nic's stomach began to indicate it wasn't happy so off to the loo Nic went and needless to say did not sleep that night. As there was no toilet, refuge was found in a plastic bag and a plastic ...
Beijing, China marshallmatters... t smile back. The Chinese people I smiled at were far more responsive. But now it's the end of my third day in Beijing and things are looking up. I've got an incredibly nice room mate - a 20 year old Japanese girl - and I've started building up a little network of acquaintances, mostly people in my building. Last night Erika, my room mate, and I went around to every room in the building where we saw a light, knocked on the door, said 'Ni hao!' and introduced ...
