Historical Traveler Reviews of Old England Hotel Bowness-on-Windermere

Wondeful Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had our wedding at the Old Endland on 11th September 04 and it was just perfect. It is an idillic English Country hotel in a wonderfully relaxing setting with perfect views over the lake.

The staff were extremly friendly and helpful. We had over 30 guests staying for the whole weekend and everyone was full of praise. No-one had a single complaint.

The food was excellent too. From the bacon and eggs to the wedding breakfast to the evening buffet.

We would recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. The family rooms are very large, the gardens are wonderful and the swimming pool overlooks the lake which you can walk down to on the private jetty.

Whether your getting married, having a romantic weekend away or just want to escape for a while, it's the perfect place and we look forward to spending many anniversaries there.

Horrible hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We visited this hotel in August this year for what was suppposed to be a calming and relaxing stay. Unfortunately it wasn't! I have never stayed in a hotel room that was as dirty and shabby in my life. The public areas didn't appear to be too bad, however, our room was damp and smelt of mould, the skirting boards and carpet had ten years worth of dust and the curtains had dead insects stuck to them! After booking a lake view room we were disappointed to have a view of the roof!. Neither could we open the window without bits of rotted wood falling off. We found it so depressing that we actually checked out after one night! The hotel also tried to charge us £25 for breakfast when we were staying on a room only basis. Would never stay at this or any other Macdonald hotel again.

Wonderful hotel in Bowness

Stayed in the Old England as it was recommended to us. Have been to this area many times but this hotel made this the best trip so far. Loved the hotel... it has lots of parking, large lounges, wonky floors, billiard room, tons of charm and very relaxing. The restaurant was great, top food. All staff very friendly and helpful. A beautiful place to chill out.

Same decor after 10+years

from bradfordlads
stayed here in feb this year for one night. 11 years sice i last stayed here. there had been no update of the decorations since my last stay and whilst the setting of the hotel canot be questioned, the overall feel of the place was shabby and run down. also the breakfast was served on a plate to you intead of the hot buffe that you should get at this price. the place needs to be referbished now and price reductions should be offered untill it is.

A beautiful hotel

The Old England, tucked away in the charming town of Bowness, is a graceful hotel with timeless appeal. I was very impressed with the attentive staff, even if they were a little thin on the ground in the restaurant! The room I stayed in was very comfortable and fitted in perfectly with the antique-filled and calming ambience created in the vast drawing room. The room service was prompt and the cuisine delicious.

Far better than I hoped

I was a bit concerned about staying here after reading the previous reviews but have to say that myself and five friends have just had a fantastic weekend here. The service was great, food fantastic and the rooms comfortable. Thankyou.

Very Poor

What a complete waste of money. The price that this Hotel charges you would expect to reflect the decor. The Hotel is Shabby and the chairs are ripped. Very dissapointing.

Excellent New year

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and i stayed at the Old England Hotel at New year, and we had a fantastic time, the food was good, the staff very friendly, they made us feel very welcome. We even stayed on 1 extra night. We havent been to this hotel before but will hopefully return next year

A dreadful hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for New Year this Year. The cost for 2 nights for two adults was £600.00. This was a complete waste of money. The decor and furnishings were completely suv standard, dirty and threadbare. The food was dreadful and the service was unacceptable. I would never go back or stay in another macdonald hotel again.

A grand time

This is a beautiful hotel with lovely views all within a stroll to the vast windows or to the nearby lake. The service is what you might expect from a traditional English hotel-excellent without stuffiness. The food is amazing and the atmosphee is relaxing. The only problem being it is difficult to book at short notice.
