Thunder, Thunder, Thunder Bay HO!!!!!

... he was forced to stop by lung cancer. He never recovered and died the following year. Since then millions of people have run under his name to continue raising money for cancer research. It was very humbling to imagine the determination and passion of one young man, and for him to have his life cut so short. The statue in his memory is situated at a lookout point close to where his run ended, the view over Lake Superior is quite ...

Night Danger along the Shores of Lake Superior

... route all the way through Ontario, Canada, and led us to decide against a ferry ride and overnight stay in Madeline Island. Instead, we proceeded to Duluth and Tofte, MN by way of Hwy 61, which abuts the U.S. side of western Lake Superior. The Cliff Dweller (a well maintained motel with private balconies directly overlooking Lake Superior) in Tofte, was a great deal. A little farther along Hwy 61, Canyon River ...

Amazing Lake Superior

Wow! Cold night!! Dad told us that it was only 45F at 7:00 when he got up to take a shower…yikes! I was quite comfortable all bundled in my bassinet, but mom and dad were a pinch frozen this morning! We started the day by going to a tourist trap where we thought we could use the internet to post a blog update, but their commador64 was out of service! We drove through a town called Wawa which for some ...

An interesting Day

... want to take the chance. I called 911 and gave them the info and they said they'd send the police and an ambulance. We wouldn't have been able to do anything for them anyway with a full van. I wonder if we're going to read about 2 escaped convicts apprehended because of 4 girls from Montreal...

After stopping for lunch in Hearst, Ontario, Allison took the ...

... seemed very unimportant as I fell under the spell of both warmth and cleanliness. I came out of the shower about ten minutes later with clean hair and body. Mireille watched me come out and asked how I felt - all I could do was grin uncontrollably and say "aaaah." I felt doped up, I was so happy! For the next twenty minutes as we waited for everyone to finish, I just stood outside in the cool breeze trying to keep myself from smiling too foolishly. I also came back to my senses ...

Immense Voyage Day 9

... Anyway, this morning, our last, I was, I am ashamed to say, neither in a good mood nor in the team spirit. Instead of enjoying and taking advantage of our last hours, I chose to be the bourgeois in the canoe. I was simply too tired, both mentally and physically. I didn't think I'd be able to handle it. I carefully hung back so that nobody would ask me to be their partner in the canoe, and then shot into the foreground when Mireille asked who would like to be the bourgeois. I ...

On to Thunder Bay

... our own Sleeping Giant outside of New Haven, so we were eager to see this one. He lies on a peninsula jutting out into Lake Superior, and from the park's website we had reserved a campsite beside an interior lake, Lake Marie-Louise. It turned out to be even better than we had dreamed, with beautiful light both morning and night, and the sun came out just as we arrived.

... was a bit of a horror show as they didn't really know how to work the tele-conferencing system. The long and the short of it is they will move Mom back to Kenora before the end of June. Returned to Ottawa on 10th nothing spectacular happened on the return flight. Back to work. Boring. Next trip planned is in July to Winnipeg, Selkirk, Kenora and Dryden. Wait for the next installment. Blogger Bob

... a camping stove, a tent, some food, small bags of our own and we were off! We planned a tentative route, but every night we'd choose a campsite as we felt the need to stop... I couldn't have imagined a better trip!! East coast next time?
