... the old ladies in handwoven clothes, were on their way to the community hall for some kind of social event. We suspected there would be feasting, but although we walked past slowly a couple of times, nobody invited us in.

We stayed in a lovely courtyard guesthouse. The courtyard had a beautiful garden, really well designed, with goldfish and turtles in pools, and two little dogs to make a fuss of. In the evenings the skies were so clear, not ...

Our next stop was the Wu Family Mansion which after our first go around with “mansions” from ancient China we knew that we should expect a compound instead of one really big house. Sure enough this was the home of the richest family in ancient Lijiang and while quite a few of the buildings from the original compound had been destroyed or reclaimed by the government, a good portion ...

... only 33% of the population of the country that will anchor our journey are insufferable.
Retracing our steps, we espy evidence of some form of construction or surveying work on the far bank; there is a manmade hole ten metres above the water. 'Sean' had recounted that, hard as it is to believe, plans were afoot ten years ago to dam the river. The Yunnan provincial government possessed wherewithal enough to scrap the madness in 2007.
True to form, it begins ...
