    The Geo-Thermal Hot Springs City

Beppu is the third largest Geo-Thermal Hot Springs City in Japan and as we approach the port there are spouts of steam everywhere. It is located on the southern island of Kyushu and the written references to the hot springs go back to the 8th century. We haven't booked a tour today, we are going to wing it and see how we go. It seems evident by the line at the free shuttle stop that many others are doing the same. We get to the Beppu Station where all modes of transport ...

A little authors note first: I'll be writing a lot more information in each picture so be sure to click on them. Also each post will cover my entire stay in that city. Beppu 7/19-21Th.

I have to admit that going to Beppu was just an excuse to pamper myself. Beppu is know for its Onsen, or hot springs. There are almost 3,000 hot spring vents throughout the city. There are more onsen in Beppu than hotels. The hostel I stayed at only had one shower, on ...

... the whole time. Somehow it didn't make it a worse experience though. It actually fitted the atmosphere. Kurokawa is said to have some of the prettiest onsen of Japan. Yea..... I can't say they are wrong. The baths I went to were really really REALLY pretty. I couldn't take pictures of all the baths because of obvious privacy reasons (most onsen are public and you enter them naked). The pictures of the onsen I took were because they we're private ones or I just ...

... I wanted to try one of the biggest and most populair onsen of Beppu to actually relax. That also didn't work out. The place was closed for a couple of days... (Is die dicht...) So I decided to get some late lunch which I steamed myself in some natural steam. It was a fun experience! The footsteam bath I did while waiting was torture though... I don't know what the hell ...

    Beppu

Beppu didn't quite live up to my expectations but they were probably too high. I stayed in a Ryokan - traditional Japanese accommodation - and while it was nice it was a bit run down. The meals were huge but of average quality. The Onsen was the highlight, the outdoor pool heated by the thermal activity in the area. I was staying in Kannawa ...
