It was a very scenic 45 minute train ride through the mountains to our next destination, Yufuin on the Yufuin Express – a historic sightseeing train with all wooden finishes including hardwood oak floors. Yufuin is fairly small in size about 15,000 people but many tourists arrive each day to take in the charms of this town and setting. The town sits in a valley surrounded by mountains – it has a bit of a Banff feel to it. The tourist stick to the ...
... t-shirts ;)) After the sand bath, we headed for the hells of Kanawara. Kanawara is an area of Beppu, on the mountain, where steam comes out of the streets, where people cook with the steam, where pools get beautiful colors from the minerals in the steam of the volcano. This place is best known for a Torii shrine in the water. Maybe you've seen this before. We arrived in the morning and were able to walk and see ...

We went to this beautiful castle in the center of the city that was built by Lord Kato Kiyamasa hundreds of years ago. Most of it has been destroyed by fire or war so only part of the castle is original. The rest is a reconstruction. We saw a video of this and the craftsmanship is so detailed and so carefully ...
