The caldera is quite fascinating. The volcano blew in 1500 BC, the biggest explosion in history. Legend has it that the darkness in Egypt during Moses time came from the ash cloud. My hey also say the resulting tsunami obliterated the Minoan culture. The newest theory is that the parting of the Red Sea was related to the blast and tsunami.

... back again. Once on the ship again we went up to the pool area and finally found chairs. The place was packed and was pretty noisey but we read and relaxed and Amy and I took a dip in the salt water pools which squirted water in your face which was far from pleasant. Back to shower for dinner. When we got back to our rooms after dinner the girls had written us the most lovely thank you note. They promised to shout us a trip one day... to Greymouth gorgeous girls ...

No, it was a good tip- the walk was not to hot- and of course only downhill ( the tricky thing with Santorini: they beautiful blue and white villages are all high up on the volcanic rocks and the beaches are- right - at sea level... So no easy strolls to the beach...) The restaurants down at Amoudi Bay were all just opening ...
The real reason we came to Greece was to visit Santorini and here we are. As I write, I'm sitting outside by the pool enjoying the gorgeous sunny weather as sunset approaches. Our hotel, Pelagos, is a good value relaxing place in Oia. It doesn't have water or caldera views as its located in the middle area between the east and west shores. It is close to the beach.
