Ogimachi is a traditional village in the Japanese Alps. There are not many people around, this last week of March in which the snow of the past winter is still visible in the colder corners. Not much traffic either, but here you don't sit in the street. So you juggle with the sparse space at the side of the street.

I have achieved. Today I managed to pay for a bottle of wine with only coins. Bottle of Chile's finest it was too! Other (obviously less significant) highlights of our stay in Takayama have included a visit to the morning markets, strolling amongst the ancient houses, pottering around some shops, much running along the river, many cherry blossom photos and a visit to the Hida folk village. After a warm ryokan farewell we visited the fabulous Matsumoto Castle amid glorious cherry blossoms. A visit to the Daio Wasabi Farm (where we had wasabi ice-cream!) was next,then our journey took us through beautiful snow-covered mountains via dozens of amazing tunnels to the lovely town of Takayama. We have had an amazing journey and thoroughly enjoyed everywhere that we have been to but Japan has really been a highlight.
Not as expensive as we were lead to believe, you can eat out easily for a couple of pounds a meal and transport was also quite cheap. Not going to miss eating and sleeping on the floor! and it was quite nice to have a knife and fork for our meal when we got to Kings Cross!!
