The snow road is definitely an experience. The Japanese spend weeks in March digging out the 8kms of road that was closed it in late November. The last Sunday of March the road is open for pedestrians and then the next day it is open for vehicles. Driving it today was ...

... of seeing "Snow Monsters" on top of the mountain, we got a great workout climbing up the mountain from the parkinglot.
The weather was unseasonably warm making the snow really heavy and easy to pack down. As long as you weren't the one breaking trail, it was pretty easy going......except the uphill part.
... have been a very easy solo trip. The guide is a American who came to Japan 25+ years ago. He has no connection to the military, but likes showing off Japan to the military who are stationed here. I don't think it's all out of the goodness of his heart - I think he gets kick-backs from the various resturants, onsens, stores, etc. that he takes people to.
