Martine drove us through the Pyrenées into Spain, this morning. We explored San Sebastián and then had tapas for lunch. It was fun to try out our Spanish. We found a great ice cream shop and also bought some souvenirs. From there, we went back into France and spent some time in Saint Jean de Luz. This town is famous because it is here that Louis XIV married Eugenie of Spain, forming the Peace Treaty of the Pyrenées. Lastly, we went to ...

Arriving in Bayonne, after the buzz and crowds of Paris, it was like another world again. It's an old river city, so a bit tattered around the edges. The wrought iron on the balconies was not as perfect, the shutters were a bit crooked, the little streets were smaller, and it ...

... fruit and chocolate, yummy and I finally got around to trying fresh crepes!!

Mutriku and the surrounding villages are part of the Basque region, so I think there was also a lot of Basque Spanish being spoken. It seemed to be that 99% of the population are very traditional and don't speak english. I met three people in the village who talked some English, only one of them I was able to hold a conversation with. So it was a place quite off the tourist map, ...
