Hannibal and his elephants

Like Hannibal and his elephants we took it upon ourselves to traverse the mighty Alps in our trusty Citroen. Driving over the Col du Glandon on our way to the village of Le Bourg D'Oisains we arrived just as the weekly markets were about to open.

A tasty breakfast of brioche and grande cafe at the local boulangerie and we were set for shopping and cycling. A visit to the local cycle shop to enquire about climbing the Alpe was in order as conditions were terrible, pouring rain ...

... wonderful villages up near the top that mainly service the ski traffic in winter and summer hikers. Two km from the summit of Col du Mollard is one such village, Albiez-Montrond. It can been seen in the pic from the summit view and where I filled my bidons.

... reasonable gradient as it left St Michel behind.

The descents were frightening and bloody cold, especially from the top of Col de Beau Plan with visibility at about five metres above 1000m. It was a bit of a shock when a deer darted out in front of me. I had my full winter gear on and it was barely enough.

We are off for dinner soon in St Michel then tomorrow two TDF climbs are on the agenda.

I set off at 5.30am with just a light drizzle and if you have seen today's stage of the TDF you would know it became progressively worse.

I made it to Thones climbing the Col De Bluffy however by then I was soaked through. My rain booties and gloves had given up and became water capsules, I couldn't warm up and still had to climb over 1400 metres.

The Alps beat me ...

Alpe D'Huez here I come!

... come all this way and not make an attempt at Alpe D'Huez. I had put on my arm warmers and rain jacket, which helped somewhat. As I left for the base of the climb, which was mostly a downhill ride of about 25km through the valley, the rain got heavy. I was building up some pretty good speed of 40+ km/h and could have gone faster but was tentative because of the wet roads. I passed through a few tunnels that were a nice break from ...
