... tomorrow there will be 8000 cyclists riding up here in a cancer fundraiser. Our hotel starts serving them breakfast from 2.45am and they ride up and down the legendary road as often as they can all day. Yes, that's right...UP and DOWN, repeatedly! It is a Dutch event called the Alpe de Huzes and last year raised €30M. The challenge is 6 ascents and descents. Last year someone cracked 9!
The drive up is good, but does not match the Stelvio...better for the cyclist, ...
... way but we did not find it. I fell in love with the cute little marmots that were scampering over the high alpine slopes. We saw very few cars going in either direction - that should have given us some clues as to how far we were off the beaten track. The resorts in this area are quiet with the winter season having finished and the summer not yet in full swing.

Another 4 toll booth sprints today or 8 if you count both the entry and exit booths, at least we're getting quicker at it now we've done it a few times. Otherwise the day was quite relaxed and without incident although I did get a stern questioning at one set of toll booths by a Gendarme as I ...
... It was pathetic to have warmed up on a "red" slope, spend the whole day outside of the slopes, and then be terrified and unable to board a "green" slope. Fortunately, a few of the egg-shaped lifts took people back down the mountain too.
At the end of our time in Briancon, we caught another carpool to Susa Italy to continue our journey.

... huge boom to shift the loose snow. So, until the all clear, only the lower slopes were open with the result that all the lifts were congested with long queues. Anyway, we got going once the tops slopes were open and Sophie, Anna and I headed to the highest peak in the 3 Valleys, Point du Bouchet, at 3230m. Some of the skiing was hard going as there were tricky moguls to navigate but it was worth the effort for the beautiful views ...
