The last stop of the day along our long route to San Francisco was in Monterey for ice cream. We parked the cars and walked down Cannery Row, stopping in a couple gift shops along the way. I got a sweatshirt and Matthew got a pressed penny with a shark on it, so we both scored. I took a few pictures; it was really pretty there at dusk. ... brings to mind. Wooded highways, deer outside my cabin, and ocean views. The area is mostly older folks and vacationers, but most people have been very pleasant.

Stayed at Monterey which still has a more working class character reflecting its fish cannery heritage. Walked down Cannery Lane, named after Steinbeck’s book. He was born in a town nearby and lived in Monterey for much of his life, which he used in his books, The sardine canneries closed in the 1950s due to over fishing.
