The happiest creatures here were the birds and Stephen and I spent some time watching their breakfasting antics. Seafood was definitely on the menu! The seagulls-which are twice the size of Aussie seagulls- would get a clam from the ocean, fly up with it and then drop it from a height, before descending directly down like a parachute ...

... heading north. We were on this for quite awhile and eventually ended up getting some good sandwiches at the Rocky Hill Country Store in Berlin, NY. It was raining by now quite decently and dampened our crossing into Vermont around the Bennington area, which we just passed through without stopping. We got gas in Shaftesbury VT and some expensive chocolate at this little road side store and settled into our hotel in Rutland, a nice Best Western. We ...

... The hike was enjoyable and very easy-going. Luke seemed to manage the hike with ease, running most of the time, sweating and drinking obsessively out of his Camelback. We did realize the importance of getting hiking shoes for Luke, as he wore his sandals and stopped every two minutes to get sand or rocks out of them. Add this to the list.

All and all, a great little hike!
