... awaiting excavating. The large tomb was used for about 300 years then nothing more for around 1000 years, then again for a few hundred years. In the Iron Age a fort was built on top and succeeding peoples upgraded the fort and altered it as more modern methods developed. The Vikings were here for a while then it was some sort of Christian settlement, and so on. All these different layers were uncovered by the archaeologists.

Left Newport Wales this morning for our drive eventually to the ferry to cross to Ireland this afternoon. Ferry due to leave at 2.30 and arrive in Ireland at 6. 30 First village was Avergavenny( remember the song), then Brecon and Carmarthen through some very green and pretty countryside Finally to Fishguard for ferry trip across St George's channel to Rosslare in Ireland. Overnight at Waterford in delightful hotel -Glanville ...

... student ID. I've saved a penny or two!

I then went for a Kilkenny beer in Kilkenny...didn't even know there was such a thing! It was like a light version of Guiness aparently. Let's say I won't be going to the Guiness Factory.

Uck.

I think most of us slept on the way back to Dublin.

Which was good, because I got no sleep that night. I went in search of a musician again.

We headed to Waterford and eventually found the Crystal factory – followed the signs pointing straight ahead but when we got to a T-junction there was no indication of which way to go. Ah well, we fluked it with a left turn. Got there just in time for the 11am factory tour, an hour of very interesting history, commentary and looking at how they make the more specialised pieces of crystal. We were ...

... and thinking he’s marvellous. But truth must be told and he’s only a feature of the blog, not the writer – he said ‘of course it’s really my blog, but I’ve outsourced it to a ghost writer!’. However I will give him small credit in that on Tuesday afternoon he sat and actually read the whole thing so now he knows what we’ve been doing, but what our plans are in Ireland are a complete unknown to him ...
