Getting Jiggy With It

A travel blog entry by smitherson

Miami Beach the city of art deco, heat and that latin feeling. It lives up to everything that we see in the movies and a little more. The air is alive with the smells, sounds and tastes of this vibrant culture. There is a nice mix of tourists and locals, who all seem to mix amicably in the exciting atmosphere.

My hostel is set right in the heart of the art deco district on South Beach on the corner of 9th and Washington. ...

... people watching. Some very minimalist clothing choices out there :) we then had dinner at a nice Thai restaurant and we are now very stuffed. The gnomes had a bit too much to drink as usual. Good thing we had a designated driver. Tomorrow we will explore some in the morning and then head to the airport and off to ...

got some great views of the gators and were able to get everyone in and
out of the park intact and since Daniel was convinced that he should

MIAMI!!!!

... the streets were buzzing, the window shopping was awesome, people watching was hilarious (how many Sugar Daddy's can there possibly be!?) and the crazy cars just never stopped!! On the way back to the hostel, we wanted to get some red bull and vodka from the supermarket as we were pretty tired, not surprisingly the red bull cans were 1L (they super size everything)! Back at the hostel there were about 40 people on the list to go clubbing so the common room ...

    A good find!!

    from julielouise

I've been to Miami numerous times and this hotel is one of my favourites. If you want to be in the heart of South Beach this is one of the best value for money places. The rooms look exactly the same as the website pictures, they are clean and although they are small, you don't go to South Beach to stay in your room. The front desk staff were really friendly and helpful. Our room was next to the reception so it was noisy, but that really didn't bother us. We had two big comfy double beds and as two girls arriving back late at night we felt quite safe. I would stay there again and enjoyed my stay. The beach is across the street and it's only a block or two from the main strip of bars and restaurants. Don't expect luxury, you'd have to pay an awful lot more for that in South Beach, if you want a clean, comfortable, cheap hotel in a good location then this is the one.

    Embodies the South Beach Lifestyle

    from cemcart

The Ocean Five Hotel is the perfect hotel to stay at if you want to be emerse yourself in the South Beach culture. Do not expect South Beach to be quiet at night, it never is because it is a party destination hence why the hotel is almost never really that quiet. If you can't stand 20 somthings that just want to have a good time then don't stay at the Ocean Five Hotel. As a matter of fact don't stay anywhere on South Beach because it is loaded with people that want to party and have a good time and look beautiful. South Beach in not for souly relaxation, it is for going out at night, eating at faboulous resturaunts, shopping, and going to the beach. If you want your vacation to have those things then the Ocean Five is perfect for you. It is right across the street from the beach which no more than a 30 second walk from outside of the hotel, it is a 45 second walk from the begining of the Ocean Drive resturaunt scene, and a 50 second walk from the shopping area on Collins Ave. It is a 2-5 min car ride to I-90 which will take you on to main land Miami and will give you highway access to the North Miami/North Miami Beach Areas. It is the perfect South Beach Hotel. Yes it is old, but so is the Tides Hotel which is 2x as expensive and so are all HISTORIC hotels which this hotel is. Yes the rooms are small but so are those of ever South Beach Hotel. Every person that writes a bad review about this hotel doesn't understand the South Florida lifestyle, it is about looking beautiful and rich, being as pretentious as you can be, and enjoing life and beautiful scenery. And, if you are not rich and don't have a trust fund then this hotel is perfect for you and your wallet and is the prefect place to make your voyage around South Beach begin from.

The room next door was used for professional services.....

    from anonymous

My husband and I read the reviews and we thought great! Also the hotel has a fancy website. It was disgusting! We stayed only 10 hours. We packed our staff at 5am and walked to the hotel across. There is only one receptionist that can't stop answering phones...and noone else. The hotel is dark, the hallways dirty and the views were of electrical wires! There was so much noise from drunk people banging their doors that we used earplugs- which did not help! At 5pm we both found out that the room next door was professionally used by on-call hookers.. In the morning we decided to speak to the owner but the receptionist did not disclose it!!! Who knows what??? Of course the rooms were old, unrenovated and the walls had cracks. I wonder who writes the good reviews of this hotel.

    Awesome Place

    from anonymous

This place Rocks! from the moment we got there for a weekend adventure. The Staff at the Ocean Five were incredible. The helped us get on guest lists and provided us with great places to eat. The deli next door is awesome and the location is perfect for what you want in south beach. I would defiently stay there again.

    Great Value, Good Location

    from anonymous

We stayed here in January 2004. We got a great deal and paid 70USD for a room. The room was large, airy and modern with a large marble shower.

The complimentary breakfast was a bit tedious after two days but there are planty of options to eat out.

The free internet access was useful.

The best part about this hotel was the location, quiet, safe and easy to get around. We tried to book an extra room during our holiday but could not afford it, so book in advance!

    A good choice.

Affordable and nice place to stay

    from anonymous

I thought this hotel was good for the price. Rooms were a little small, but clean. Service was good and right near the beach and strip. I'd def stay there again but no pool.

    Cheap, Clean and Friendly

    from anonymous

I just got back from lovely South Beach. I spent 3 nights at this hotel with some friends for my birthday weekend! I must say that the hotel met all my needs. Although the rooms were very small, they were cute and served it's purpose (SLEEP)...(who stays in the room when you're in South Beach anyways). The hotel staff was very friendly. In one situation, our CD player was not working properly. They promptly replaced it 3 times with no attitudes! Also, they were very helpful with trying to get us night club information and free passes. The location of the hotel was also great! It was 1 block from where the action was, so sleep was possible. Night clubs, bars and the beach are in short walking distance!I would definitely stay there again! Cheap, Clean and Friendly!

    Clean but not so efficient

    from trini121NewJersey

I just returned from a 4 night stay at the ocean 5 hotel. Rooms are small but some are not and they are the same price so if you initially get a small room ask for a larger one. The service is what left a bad taste in my mouth. There is no maintenance service after about 5 pm so I was told to come to the front desk and get the plunger to unclog the toilet in my room myself!!??!! No, that was not a typo! And the toilet kept on clogging day after day. The manager did not seem to care the next day when I reported the worker who had eventually come to the room and unclogged the toilet after I got in his ear about him expecting me to be the plumber. Nice looking hotel but the service left much to be desired. Also, there is no such thing as soundproof rooms. The cleaning staff awakened us every morning with their loud laughter.

    Clean and efficient

    from anonymous

My best friend and I stayed here during the WMC this past March, so you can imagine there was a lot of the Spring Break thing going on. Aside from that, we were pleasantly surprised by the ocean five, it was very clean and the staff super friendly and courteous, even though I am sure that they were run ragged by the spring breakers. It is a few blocks from the heart of South Beach, but it is within walking distance to everything. We even did the drunk walk home from the clubs on Lincoln Road early one morning when we couldn't catch a cab (in stilettos!) All in all there was just enough room for the both of us to walk around the double beds in the room, the bathroom was clean with modern features and an all-glass shower. If you are looking for a room with a view or a pool don't stay here. If you are looking for a clean, inexpensive place to sleep and shower in between going to the beach and partying at night this place is above average!

    Simple and friendly

    from anonymous

Beach across the street and one block removed from the action (perfect for those who want their 4 hours of sleep). Hotel gave us late check out and were super friendly. Good buy for under $100 a night.
