Miami bringing the Heat

The NY winter had drained me a bit so i was very much looking forward to the tropical conditions of Miami. The Shelbourne hotel was the perfect location on south beach. Close to restaurants and night spots.

Things worth noting:

  • southbeach - amazing food
  • mango bar - latin music and dancing
  • Club space and …

... coloured. We were staying at the Viscay Hotel which was really comfortable and only one block back from Ocean Drive so right in the hustle and bustle. It was in Miami that I had my first salad in the states – ah healthy food, at least the options are on the menu here unlike in NYC. We also had some frozen cocktails which seem to be the specialty here. It was weird even though we were in the States it already felt like we were in Mexico, ...

Planes, Trains, and Meat Smokers

... certain if my flight would be making it to Curacao and endlessly pestering the American Airlines staff, I learned that we would indeed be going, but that our plane had no fuel. The waiting game began. I stared at people. I shifted around. I organized my purse. I became one of those weird people who stands up, paces, and looks out the window at the mysterious airport operations. A fellow weirdo window-looker roamed by my area while I was busy judging ...

    Bring your own hotel!

Indifferent service, overpriced, and dirty. I particularly loved the "modern fitness room" that had garbage (from a large black bag) strewn all over the floor. The wait staff were rude and oh so slow. The first room we were given hadn't been cleaned, and only after an argument (3 complaints later) did we get a new room (arrived at 11:30 in the evening). The room decor, which should be Art Deco, was bargain basement "Mediterranean", to be polite. Room service was the most expensive I've ever seen (for the food). The staff was polite, but completely unwilling to help. No late check out (at any price) left us changing in the pool locker room. Only go to this place if you have to. Don't waste your money or vacation days.

    Not A Good Value

    from anonymous

Stayed here a couple weeks ago, the view and location is awesome but the hotel itself is not a good value for what you get. The room was old and musty, the windows needed to be cleaned for $250 a night I didn't think it was worth it.

Went to the bar for a coffee liquor one night and was totally ripped off $20 for that and a Highball.

    SHELBORNE Not good

    from anonymous

We stayed there over New Year. It is not a very nice place. On arrival we were allocated a horrible room after a bit of complaining we were changed to one with nice views (something positive). The place is not very clean and it smells a bit musty. It really needs to improve.

    I would not recommend it.

    Great deal in SoBe

My husband and I had a great time in South Beach. When we checked into the hotel, the manager greeted us personally and upgraded our room to an ocean front room at no charge. The room had a balcony and a view that took our breath away. The staff really went out of their way for us. The concierge got us into all the night clubs without having to pay or wait in line. We will be back and for South Beach, the price was right.

    I love this place!

I love this place! Beautiful hotel right on the beach and the staff was very friendly, professional & helpful. My rooms were beautiful, clean and large. The bartenders were great and the cafe was nice and very tropical. The pool was perfect and we got plenty of relaxing in under the sun. The concierge got us in to all of the best clubs and their restaurant suggestions were exceptional. I've already made my next reservation to go back!

The people at the Shelborne were very warm and I've told my friends to check it out.

    Never again

    from anonymous

The location is perfect and the lobby impressive, but forget the rest. There was nothing 'Art Deco' about it, just awful. Cheap furniture, stained and sagging mattress and box spring in our room, ill-fitting sheets, overall poor housekeeping (sometimes no bathmat or not enough towels). The kitchenette unit contained a sink, but nothing else (not even a glass, etc.).

The one meal we had at the restaurant was very expensive, but one of the worst we have ever had, a real disgrace.

Receiving pool towels was a challenge sometimes. Calling housekeeping usually helped, but one day we waited for 1/2 hour by the pool, but nobody ever showed up with towels.

We were booked for 5 nights and couldn't wait to get out of there. Stay away from the Shelborne!

    Real Special

I couldn't wait to hit South Beach! Ths Shelborne is very special and they made us feel real special, too. We'll go back again soon.

My New Home in South Beach!

    from anonymous

I love this place! Its right on the ocean in South Beach and we could walk to the Convention Center! The staff was friendly, fun & helpful and we loved our accommodations (our group had rooms and Suites). Went to the Shelborne for the first time for my company meeting: it was incredible and the best meeting we ever had! I just went back for the third time with my friends and every time has been phenomenal: in fact, because I have been there before, the Manager gave me a Suite at the price of a room. You can walk to the Convention Center - and everything in South Beach! We love this place and its probably the best value going... I'll be back.

    We loved it!

    from anonymous

My associates & I got booked at the Shelborne for a meeting at the Convention Center; we returned our rental car because we were able to walk (its one block away). This place was fantastic and a great value! Lots of babes and models, so we used the money that we saved on our car at the hotel's bar (loved the bartender, too). Our rooms were great and the staff was fun and informative. We'll be regulars and next time we're reserving one of their Suites. We had a phenomenal time! The employees made us feel like we were stars.

    Don't be fooled

    from anonymous

When you walk in, the lobby is beautiful, the pool is nice, and when they hand you the keys to your room, you're psyched! But from the moment when you slide that key into the slot, to the moment when you hand them back, IT'S PAINFUL! We stayed for 3 nights at the Shelborne in March '02 and it sucked! We had to call maintenance three times to fix our toilet, and everytime the room next door flushed, you'd feel like you're in the middle of a hurricane. Our no-view room seemed like it was straight out of a seedy-motel (not "newly-renovated"). It had broken plastic furniture (the kind sold out of the back of a truck!) and a round metal ball sticking out of the carpet (I have no clue what that was!) If you can stay anywhere else on Collins, then do it! Don't be fooled!
